Tabs with rhythm

It's human nature to want to do things the easy way.

I concur, but I just can't comprehend anything being easy, dealing with tab.. that is.

Still, I wish him/her good luck. If it wasn't for amateur/semi-pro, enthusiasm, I'd probably have quit playing by now.

There is a lot to be said for watching someone play out of sheer love of it.

It's not so hard to understand if you look at it closely. Think of TABs as painting by "color by number." You are directed where the put the brush and what color to use. Reading music is like learning how to paint at art school.

Unfortunately, TABs are hardly ever correct. Maybe they'll eventually drive everyone to actually learn to read to counteract their mistakes.

All the "learn to read" advice is great (I am a music teacher, a tuba player, and have been playing bass ALMOST a year)... The problem is that when someone wants to find a bass part, there are a heckuva lot more tabbed out by amateurs to be found online than as sheet music... I buy a lot of sheet music and bass books, but I still have a lot of stuff I want to find that is not available as traditional written notation... So tabs is what we have to work with a lot of the time (I vastly prefer to read regular notation). Unless I am uninformed... are there sites to download notated music (other than just buying sheet music)?

You could write in your own rhythms and while you're at it, translate those tabs into standard notation.

Anytime I see someone using tabs, the fret selections never make sense. A root, 5, octave pattern is always played in an awkward way. There are some logical positions for certain pitch patterns and the tabs I've seen don't follow them.

Hello guys and gals-

Just a few friendly reminders for those who wish to post in the tab forum.

This is NOT the forum to discuss the merits, or lack thereof, of the tab system. Discussions about this have led to arguments in the past, which is unnecessary. A search of the GI forum will provide you with all of bickering you could want.

Also, we are trying to keep this forum uncluttered by posts that are of no relevence/help to the original poster.

Such unwelcome responses would be:

"It's not that hard, just listen to it."

"Tabs won't help you. They suck."

"I don't have the tab for that."

"Goat Farm RULES!" (PM would be good venue for such communications.)

These posts are a waste of time for all parties involved.

Please, think of the children.

Unless I am uninformed... are there sites to download notated music (other than just buying sheet music)?

I know of a few sites where you can download sheet music (for a price) but none that let you download for free.
