Double Bass Tailpiece question

Agreed. I've done around 50 of them; maybee more...they all start to blend in together after a while. I prefer it, but, funny as it may be to some of us, there are a lot of people in my area who want and like the old school thud. I'll let them try a "patched" one and a stock one and they ask for the original spec. Old habits are hard to break for them. I don't always think the customer is right, but most of the time the guy who pays the bill gets to make the final choice. Its their bass, not mine and for a lot of reasons, we may hear things different.

For sure. I see country bands on TV sometimes and wonder why the bassist is playing what he is, when presumably he could afford something much better. Well, I guess that's the sound which got him the gig!

Last night I went to a rowdy jazz gig at a place I play about once a month; a rare one where we play all acoustic and there are a good number of great players and a horn section all tearing it up. Last month I took my factory spec. American Standard bass. In the shop, it sounds huge and full and thick, like the best of any old plywood bass you'll hear- way better than a Kay...but in this room, it got completely lost and I almost could not hear myself. Last night I brought my rebuilt '47 Kay (with the belly patch and a ton of other repairs / rebuilds / mods). It cut through that room HUGE and sounded fantastic; everyone commented on how good it sounds and how much better it was than the other bass. 'Funny how it works like that some days....different room and I'd probably bring a different bass; another reason to have a quiver of bases.
