Takamine TB-10 Users

I had a mishap with the TB-10 yesterday when packing up. I foolishly let it slide over and the headstock hit the floor. Completely shattered one of the cast brass tuning machines. Instrument is not damaged but the tuner has gone on to its eternal rest. I am normally obsessively compulsive (redundant statement?) about taking care to "do no harm" to my instruments. So...imagine my mortification!

I have a call into Takamine HQ in California but I'm sure that machine will have to come from Japan.

While I’m waiting for Takamine to get back to me, does anyone have a better idea as to how I can secure a D-strimg tuning machine?

Thanks, in advance.

Charles

I could not find a close up of the back of the headstock. It's looks like the tuners are brass and have an exposed gear. This is the closest visual match I could find.

Bummer!
I don't know about tuners from Takamine, but recall they wanted something like $800 for a replacement end pin for the B/TB10.
The black Grovers above would look nice.

The guy Tom Watters recommended doesn’t stock anything for the B/TB-10. I’m not surprised. I may end up replacing the whole set with whatever will fit in the existing holes. At least I didn’t crack the headstock.

IMHO reengage with Takamine and squeak a little.

Years ago, I bought a used Yamaha bass. It was missing one of the tone control hat knobs. I assumed the knob would be easy to source because the bass was still in production. It turned out to be a huge hassle.

I was in Germany at the time and a couple of in-country dealers struck out. Tried again a few years later with US dealers, but they could not help either. I asked them for the phone numbers for their official support contacts and started elevating the request through Yamahas support structure. Eventually someone at or near the top of the support chain made a commitment to help. He seemed very surprised that he had to step in and gave me one final name to call. He said if this person could not help him, that he would take care of it. This person also hit the wall. When I called back to the top guy, he took my info and got the part to me.

A man after my own heart. Thanks.

I want a used TB10 if anyone wants to sell. Thanks

I have one that I may be putting up for sale - as I have gone to a full-length scale instrument. Not sure yet. I need to replace one of the tuning machines (see discussion above). It is near-mint to excellent ++ condition. Also had side markers professionally installed on the side of the fingerboard. How urgent is your need to acquire one?

Thanks,
Charles

Thanks!
I may be willing to purchase it and be the one responsible for getting the tuning machine. I will buy one as soon as I can find one.
Have you found a whole set of tuners that would match the holes?

I think Dave’s Guitar of La Crosse, WI, has managed to locate a set of the originals. That’s the good news. The bad news is that they only sell them in sets of 4…for $360/set. If one didn’t mind not replacing the originals, I think either Schaller or Gotoh (or both) make a set that will fit the holes. I had intended to ask $2500 for it. But that was before I broke two tuners. So that’s on me and of course the replacement cost is negotiable.

Your thoughts are?

Can you send me some pics? Please include pics of the headstock where it fell.
I have to go out for a bit so I will get back to you later tonight or in the morning if you don’t mind communicating on Christmas.
Thanks a lot
I’m very interested!

I don’t mind talking on Christmas. Weve been isolated by this recent storm so we’re home alone. Detailed pics forthcoming later tonight.

in the meantime, I think I gave you some slightly confusing information that I need to correct. When I initiated the conversation above I thought only one tuner was damaged. Then when I took it off I saw the other one on the treble side was cracked also. So I removed it as well. But NO damage to the instrument. A bit miraculous if you ask me.

I also have a stand for it by Koenig and Meyer if you’re interested in that as well. Made for a cello but it works very well for the Tak. Very secure.

These give a pretty good picture of the thing. There is one small ding on the bottom of the lower bout near the output jack. What appears to be a scratch on the lower waist is a reflection. No scratch. There are two marks on the headstock that are not dings. I really don’t know what they are but they’re very small. No dings on the neck or the ebony fingerboard. Top and back are pristine. The bronze support rod and pocket are solid.

The case is solid and everything functions as it should. But you can tell it’s been used. I’d rate it an 8 of 10 overall. Also, I replaced the handle with a better one.
