I have! I've gotten a ton of good info by using the search function over the years. Sure, you're not going to find info on G&L, and putting in Fender is useless. But a tailored search can work really well, IME.

I'm not a "do a search" guy anymore. I used to be, but never with new folks. Only those who had been here for a good while and should frankly know better. I truly don't get why someone who's been on TB for, say, five years, would start a P vs. J thread. That said, I just scroll on by now.

And that's the point.

If someone has been here for a few years, and posts regularly, they should "get it" a little more. And they might even deserve a little bit of nit picking if they ask those kinds of questions. They also should know our traditional inside jokes about such things so they're less likely to take it the wrong way when we pile on.


Kid gloves should be the order of the day for new members though. Until they get "our brand of humor" it would be easy to take it the wrong way when we go after them.

The nicknames I use for my closest friends and family would offend those with even the thickest of skin. But we have a history, and they know I love 'em, so I get away with it.

I tend to just walk away more often now. If it becomes obvious that the new person can't read or interpret what they're reading, it's time to just walk away from the conversation.
If their first post is to ask for help with their "squire", I'm already done.

Nothing against Squier, but more the folks who can't read.

It could turn someone off so much that they don't stick around or even quit bass altogether.

i'm not aware of that either, but some of the 'contentiousness' in some threads is useful entertainment. (IMO)

i don't agree with this at all. politeness works for everyone, most of the time, but only a little is needed if we respect one another in spite of our differences, real or perceived. IMO, "kid gloves" sets up the certainty of 'failure to thrive' both here and in the real world --- with regard to the subject of the OP. and then there is the problem of who decides when that phase of 'newbie-ness' is over and that therefore the rest of us, as contributors, can now resume the posture of 'our natural selves'?



pointing out that there is a search function (such that it is) or that some issues on TB are "purely subjective" is valuable information to share and, IMO, more important than trying to 'save someone' from the relatively civilized nature of the TB forums.

I've come up blank several times on searches within the site, but using Google to search and adding 'TalkBass' to my query seems to always yield results.

Yep, that's exactly what I do. The search function here is useless.

When I was new here one guy talked down to me like I was an idiot. Of course, being I wise guy myself I played along and did my best to irritate him. It isn't hard to irritate some people. It was probably the wrong thing for me to do but sometimes I just can't help poking a pin into someone's inflated ego.
The guy got really worked up and as far as I could tell he never understood that I was messing with him. Be aware that kind of behavior is frowned upon here and can earn you negative points for trolling.

Yes, I have, on both counts. I've suggested trying it on several occasions. However, it's always something like "You might want to try..."; and it's most always after I've tried to answer their question as best I can. But, yeah, I've seen some of the pointed "Suggestions" to use the search function (with the implied "and piss off" attached), too. And, yes, it's often a confusing; sometimes frustrating; and occasionally futile exercise. But, such as it is, it is a resource, if only in the sense of "no stone left unturned"...

I generally don’t start new threads unless I’m posting something that’s breaking news. Like a noteworthy RIP (noteworthy to me anyway).

For general questions or comments, I try to always do a search first. I’ll probably dredge up a seven year old thread that’s related to my question, rather than starting a new thread. I actually think the search tool works pretty well for this board but sometimes it takes careful choice of search words.

Well that’s how I try to roll here.
