I'm pretty new here, but not new to the land of internet forums. One thing in common is that there are usually members who are cranks and basically any question posed will result in a "did you use the search function" response.
I haven't seen that much here. But the sheer amount of information on this site dwarfs the Victory motorcycle forums I've frequented for years (we're a minority) and I'd be surprised if even veteran members could always find what they're looking for. But yeah, I've seen some rather terse responses to questions I'm sure have been asked many times.
Which I never understood, here or elsewhere. The function of places such as TalkBass is to share information thereby making everyone better informed. To exchange opinions. To make connections. I feel as a member of a forum--this one, or any other--it's sort of my responsibility to answer any question, no matter how inane or tedious, if I am able to do so.
And if I can't answer the question, I will suggest a course of action that may result in the information being found, and usually something more specific that "use the search window". I think that response is more tired than the most frequently asked question you could imagine.

If some new bass player, or 50 year veteran bass player who just happened upon our community, asks what you think is a "stupid question" take a breath. Swallow your intense desire to berate someone and walk away.
We were all new once. We all had to find our way around here. We all had to learn about the search function.
Not everyone comes here knowing there's no "best bass for metal" or that underpowering cabs is a myth. The proper way to fire a drummer is something that takes years to perfect.
But they all come here with one thing in common. They are EXCITED about playing bass and discussing it with other bass players.
Don't be the jerkweasle that messes that up. Don't run somebody away from here just so you can get a jab in.
Go kick your cat or beat your kids if you need an outlet for your frustration. But don't bring that crap in here!
Once someone has been around the block a few times with this crowd, he/she knows all of our inside jokes and one liners about certain questions. But a new member might not understand that we're just having a little fun around a question that has been a bit of a sore subject.
Either help or go away. But don't be the TalkBass playground bully. It doesn't make you cool. It just makes you a jack@$$.
Edit: I am a sarcastic guy. I didn't literally mean "bully". It's not THAT serious. But the point is sometimes new guys don't know we're just being goofballs. So tread lightly.
(The part about beating your kids was, of course, a joke. Cat kicking, however, can be fun for the whole family if you do it right.)
Come to think of it, the only time I received a snarky "Use the search function" response was when I was new to bass playing, and new to this forum. I dared to pose the question about those cheap SX basses, but because the search function requires a minimum of three letters, typing in 'SX' did nothing. Later I learned Essex basses were one and the same as SX, just renamed for searching purposes evidently.

The one that bugs me is the FB stuff that comes around & there'll be 4 threads in one day about that particular topic.
I'm sure they've lost count of how many times the "Bass players are the most important member of the band, scientifically!" has been posted.
Meh....it is irrelevant to me if someone is new here or not. Just because they just joined TB doesn’t mean they are a new bassist, nor are they a shrinking violet that needs to be coddled. Make your first post telling most of the members here to “man up”? Well, you reap what you sew. Welcome to TB.
