Take it easy on new members!!!!!

I think the metal gear questions are valid and I hope they never stop. Has any other group been more shunned on TB? To the point of having a common query banned by TB brass itself, and by extension having a subset of our community shunned and laughed at endlessly? I don’t care for metal, but I don’t think it’s cute or laughable how those young folks were treated here through the years.

For crap sake, guys. Lighten up on new members, will ya?

Every member's join date should be posted right under his/her avatar.

If some new bass player, or 50 year veteran bass player who just happened upon our community, asks what you think is a "stupid question" take a breath. Swallow your intense desire to berate someone and walk away.

We were all new once. We all had to find our way around here. We all had to learn about the search function.

Not everyone comes here knowing there's no "best bass for metal" or that underpowering cabs is a myth. The proper way to fire a drummer is something that takes years to perfect.

But they all come here with one thing in common. They are EXCITED about playing bass and discussing it with other bass players.

Don't be the jerkweasle that messes that up. Don't run somebody away from here just so you can get a jab in.

Go kick your cat or beat your kids if you need an outlet for your frustration. But don't bring that crap in here! :bored:

Once someone has been around the block a few times with this crowd, he/she knows all of our inside jokes and one liners about certain questions. But a new member might not understand that we're just having a little fun around a question that has been a bit of a sore subject.

Either help or go away. But don't be the TalkBass playground bully. It doesn't make you cool. It just makes you a jack@$$.

Edit: I am a sarcastic guy. I didn't literally mean "bully". It's not THAT serious. But the point is sometimes new guys don't know we're just being goofballs. So tread lightly.

(The part about beating your kids was, of course, a joke. Cat kicking, however, can be fun for the whole family if you do it right. ;))
Man, I almost 'liked' this post before getting half way thru it

It's as if most Heavy Metal players think they need special gear just for their genre :roflmao:

I was thinking about this...

It makes sense in a way. Some metal fans listen to all kinds of other music as well, but I've definitely met a few people who listen to "mainly metal" – or in a couple of cases, literally nothing else :D

And this seems to have 2 effects - 1) acting as a kind of filter through which they see all music ("metal" and "non-metal") and 2) giving a kind of tribal identity – "I'm not like the others".

I definitely got this when I went to Wacken metal festival in Germany with short hair, khaki shorts and a T-shirt that wasn't black and didn't have an unreadable band logo on it :ninja:

So if that's your musical perspective, and metal is like this very strict religion for you, it makes sense that you would want to use the "right" gear for it – you wouldn't want to end up like those other non-metallers.

tl;dnr - be nice to metallers asking about the "best xxx for metal". They mean well.

PS in case you were wondering: active electronics, roundwound steel strings, and as much amplification as you can afford/fit in your car. YMMV

You do realize the metal gear questions are jokes, right??

A joke that only a select few "get" is not a "joke." It's an "inside joke," meaning there has to be additional knowledge by the reader/listener to understand why it's funny.

It's not an inside joke. It was a silly reference to a silly way to vent one's frustrations. I thought it was hilarious. The visual of my own beloved feline flying across the yard making a screeching noise having just left my foot was funny to me. I would never ACTUALLY kick my cat. It sucks that I have to say that out loud.

If my joke somehow "encourages someone to commit violence against animals" then that person was already standing on the ledge ready to jump. I refuse to walk this world trying to avoid setting off already crazy people.

LOTS of humor is cruel. Most of the gags in old cartoons involve violence. They were FUNNY. (Please don't be one of those ridiculous squishy people who are glad we no longer "advocate violence" in our Saturday morning cartoons. Both Tom and Jerry were fictional characters. No actual cats or mice were ever hurt in the making of a Tom & Jerry cartoon.) The vast majority of humor take a pot shot at SOMEBODY.

As far as I'm concerned, there's nobody who is off limits for humor. We all have target on our backs for comedy. And I'm fine with that.

Are you saying we can no longer make jokes about mother-in-laws? Lawyers? Politicians? "Corporate fat cats"?

Everybody is an "innocent victim". But it's still funny. Lighten up, big guy. ;)

For the record, I have (well, my kids have) a wonderful cat. He kills mice, squirrels, moles, birds, and even rabbits in my yard all the time. So, it seems, he can take care of himself. I don't suppose there will be any weeping for the "innocent" critters he kills on a daily basis. :roflmao: And I have never, and would never, kick the dang thing.
