Because no store charges what is on the tag. Whats on the tag is known as a MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price). Its also called a list price.

Look here. This Cort lists for $650, but what MF is actually selling it for is $423. A difference of about 35%. The bass you bought listed for $695 and he charged you $593. A difference of about 15%.
