Taking a Stance

hate to say it blue, but time has narrowed your options and you will have to accept it sooner or later.....

Not going to do it or acept it. I am not playing in a blues or jazz band with guys my age.

It will be tough, but I will do it and I will be sucessful. I did it when I was 56 and I will do it when I'm 57.

You my friend will be the first to know when I land something that is working.

BTW, I love proving people wrong.

Playing with some older groovy' cats in a good blues band or jazz group wont cut it since that will lump you with folks your age and wont let you blend in with the younger hip players.

I guess I think you can be young and hip at 57 and you don't.

Look, I am going to pull this off, just like I did last year, it's just going to take time.

It's entirely possible that you can be hip at 57, but you can't be young.

Young is a relative term, I have seen some rock guys out there in their 60s that seem younger to me than some 30 year olds, it depends on a lot of variables.

For example, and out of shape 30 year old, the one with the bald head, cargo shorts, gym shoes and oversized t shirt, does not seem young to me at all.

And I hope you do Blue but will it last? I'm not saying you cant be cool and and "act" younger than you are in a band and life. I will soon be 49 and i dont live or act it. But I don't want to play dress up in a pop band of 20 somethings..that wont work. I'm about good music not image.If the music is good thats whats importent, people will listen and care.

Bassbully you have been suportive, because at the end of the day, your one of the few that can read between the lines.You know where i am coming from.

I am not looking and never have to make a fool out of myself.

And you said it and you know better than I. if the music is not happening none of the other stuff matters.

I am really suprised at the attitude most of you have taken.

But I am guessing a lot of you are under 20 and just don't have a lot of experience. But even then I expect you under 20somethings to be smarter than I was at your age.

...look, it's really very simple. If YOU are auditioning for a spot in THEIR band, then YOU need to play by THEIR rules. If they want you to learn 10+ songs, schlep your rig for a thirty-minute jam, bring coffee or beer for the band, or wait a week while they decide - if you want in, that's the price you pay, plain and simple. YOU are the new guy, and THEY have what YOU want. Being demanding and inflexible is rarely going to work in your favour.

If you aren't interested in playing ball on somebody else's court, then you have to start your own band. End of story.

Some of us are surprised by the attitude you are taking as well. Doesn't make sense for you to constantly rag on young folks when those are the people you want to play with.

When I was in my 20s, I played alot of Blues, so I constantly had to deal with folks older than me. Most of them were cool but I ran into some of guys who were old and condescending. They always used the old, "I've been playing Blues before you were born". And my response was one of two options. If I wasn't feeling surly, I'd simply say, "Sorry dude, I'm not old, can't help it". But, if I were feeling surly or the guy was exceptionally condescending, I'd respond with "Well if you've been playing since the dawn of time, you must not have learned much if after all these years you are (sharing a bill with us young punks, auditioning for us young punks, filling in for us young punks, playing in the same dive bars as us young punks, etc.)"

Condescension doesn't make you appear more professional or seasoned. It makes you difficult to work with.

Thats what suprises me , that you can't read between the lines and that I am in no way ragging on young musicians.

There are many young bass players that could blow me away with no effort at all.

It's the younger musicians that make things happen, not people my age.

Now I am more than suprised, I'm ashamed that you guys don't get it.

Blue, I was refering to me on making a fool of myself. I would stick out like a turd in a punch bowel with a band of twenty somethings :p You ...might not. To me its the music. My band has a good look??? The lead is slim, good looking, kinda country kid. The drummer more idie rock looking. Then you got me hippster doofus, large build who wears rimmed glasses and goofy hats,vest etc. Our multi strings player is the elder and looks like a loving Grandfather type on and off stage. Do we care..Nope! Its all about the music and that's what we care about.
We dont want to market our band to venues where dudes are chasin chicks or "Meat markets" that wont work. We are after good music loving venues where creative people go to seak out new talent and good music acts. If you want to see this mess of footstompers' go here Link Removed

The type of band you are looking for and want to be in reflects a different image and IMO will be hard to find and harder for you to fit into. My advice all along is to find a group where you are a better fit and will be in for the long haul. I know you have a few ideas up your sleave from our PMs and I wish you all the luck in the world.

I really feel you are a good guy Blue but you are letting allot of this stuff go to your head making you not think so clearly at times which has reflected here in some posts. This is why some TBers have been negitive to you.

We all have idea's of what we want in life, but sometimes due to things out of our control we have to adapt or change those ideas to meet our need.
