But...I still hear that she really can sing and to my ear she is more on than off in this clip.

I disagree.

Bending time, rhythm, using phrasing, etc. and bending pitch are elements of style. Not having consistent pitch is an element of musicianship. It leads listeners to think you cant "hear" pitch, which is your bad if you either dont have the vocal control or the ears to bring it back home, or you somehow think singing out of tune is "artistic". Its not. It just sounds bad. I'd listen to Streisand all day long over some goofy singer-songwriter type who "plays" with pitch in the name of being "artistic" (read: "they dont actually know the pitch").

I'm not sure what you're point is here, but Chaka Kahn has a well known body of work singing, live performances, records, etc. Tal has no such body of work singing, you can't product a video or recording to illustrate her vocal prowess.

My point is to point out that even someone as respected as Chaka Khan can be off key in a live setting. I'm not saying that makes it acceptable to be off key, just putting it out there to level the playing field a bit. In my opinion, the fact that Chaka has built a career out of singing makes her shortcomings in a live setting even less acceptable than they otherwise would be. Maybe Tal is a crap singer, but maybe she was having an off night. I figure if it can happen to Chaka Khan it can happen to Tal Wilkenfeld. And yes, to large degree I'm simply playing Devil's advocate here.

Whoa now. While I never really appreciated his way, there was a reason he sung/sings that way. And you cannot compare a folk legend like Dylan to a young female bass player. Sorry... nolo contendre. Sure part of it was the times he grew in.

BTW< I aint like rushing out to buy her vocal album.

And the last time we cut someones head off, we didnt get taller, it was simply a bloddy mess. One less bad guy, and more stained souls. Bad trade.

You guys are so easy to bait. Put up one very poorly recorded You Tube clip, add silly comment about legendary singer, and you guys are actually taking this seriously. Too bad Tal didn't play an SX bass in this clip so people could really go nuts. :). (note use of smiling emoticon, people.)

On a related (Tal note) - I'm growing very anxious for Tal's followup to Transformation. She's mentioned that there will be several guests on the album, and I've read from a usually reliable source that Jeff Beck will appear on a couple of tracks. Also, she recently tweeted about having both Wayne Krantz and Vinnie Collauita together for the first time "on her session".

Yeah, she dropped a few notes on the floor and it looked like she knew it as it was happening because she tried to swallow at least one of them.

A bigger deal to me would be that horrible arrangement and butchering of the song. I cant believe I wasted 50MB of this month's bandwidth quota downloading it but I had to see what all you guys were fussing about.

As for the general grouchiness here, maybe when some of you guys are sore and tired of wanking, you turn your ire toward the former object of your ...er... affections. :ninja:

Its not the band's arrangements of the songs from The Imagine Project, it Herbie's, and he was Grammy nominated (and won one or two) for his efforts. As for Tal's singing, you have to compare her pitch and tone to the version on The Imagine Project, not Bob Dylan's original. Tal's voice is very similar in quality tone and pitch to (Lisa Hannigan's??) studio version.
