Tal Wilkenfeld- And she can sing too!

First of all, I am NO singer. Very limited range and a funny tone to boot. Now that that's out of the way.... while I heard a few off notes from her here and there (so what!) I thought she had a very pleasing tone to her voice. Vocally I'd say she's a diamond in the rough. She'll keep practicing and she'll get even better.

And I'll never be as good as she is on the bass.

Good for you, girl!

I enjoyed Tal's performance, warts and all. She's a talented musician with good ears. Her singing will improve quickly no doubt, as will her confidence. Music is not about technique, it's about expressing what is inside you, especially when singing. Bob Dylan never sang in tune, and Hendrix was not much of a singer either. Kristin Korb was a bit "pitchy" in the posted clip too. So what, they were making music. And, some of my favorite singers are not technically very good.

That 13-year old girl playing along with the Beck/Tal track is pretty amazing for only playing for a year. But consider that once you see somebody else do something, it suddenly becomes easier for other people to do it (think Jaco). In a way, I think Tal's success is opening psychological doors for young women to believe (correctly) that they too can be excellent musicians, and not just singer-songwriters.

Last year I saw Tal play with Vinnie Colaiuta and Oz Noy, and she was killing it. IMHO, Vinnie is a challenging drummer to play with (in a good way), and Tal was right there with him. She has an excellent sense of rhythm, and can mess with over-the-bar polyrhythms with the best of them.

When you sing, you are really putting yourself out there, exposing yourself in a way that playing the bass can hide quite effectively. I admire people that can do that, so good on you Tal!

Isn't it great how every performance can now conceivably be put on Youtube for everyone to critique? I shudder to think of some of the moments that I've had on stage that could have been recorded by someone in the audience with an iPhone and subsequently put up on Youtube for the world to dissect!

Yes!! develop your skills on your own time, not on my dollar, dammit :)

BTW, I liked Hendrix's singing, however there's a reason why he played the Star Spangled Banner instead of sang it.

Everyone is entitled to a bad night, but I'll bet your musical chops and experience would shine through anyway. :cool:
