I quite enjoy this! It's obviously a spontaneous live performance. Actually after the "debaculus fiasco" that was the Black Eyed Peas in the Superbowl it's refreshing to hear no Autotune (although I'll bet Fergie wishes it had been a little more cranked on her channel).:D

Folks are quick to diss another musician on their ability, but when they get dissed the standard response is "Who are they to diss me, they've got no idea how tough it is "

Having said that, Tal's talent may be exceeded by/preferred to by someone else, BUT that still doesn't negate the fact that Herbie Hancock is willing to share the stage with her.

That's a feat few will ever attain.;)

So are you supposed to say she her voice sounds fantastic or she sounds great when you don't think she does? I don't think anyone said she sounded AWFUL, that would be a dis.

Anybody remember Marcus Miller's first album from the 80's, or Stanly Clarke's Vulcan Princess? I'd cut her some slack, I don't think she is trying to compete with Esperanza Spalding, she was probably just the best singer for that song on the gig that day.;)

So, I get what everyones saying.. I really get a kick out of the drummers quick look to herb, do you think that was an impressed or distressed look?

Either way a good player, grabbing the metaphorical cajones and singing over solo bass on stage with Herb deserves my respect!
And not being primarily a vocalist, she did a great job under stress!

I hope i live long enough to see tal playing in her 40's!

Well, I guess I should've worded things differently as I think you've misconstrued my overall point.

My overall point is where is the positivety or support for our own kind? She may not sound great, you may not care for her style or she may not be wearing provcative enough clothing.

Those that criticize do just that. No one said "I don't care for that, but hoorah for a fellow bassist making a darn good effort". Stone throwers Focus entirely on the negative.

Where's the positive brother? That's all I'm askin'.;)

That's very cool.
dunno if it's an improvised solo or a transcription really. Doesn't sound like the version I've seen (to be fair, there are a few more now, so depending on the version).

Here's my thing, and it's not necessarily about Tal, or a slight against the young lady in the video, anyone has in them the ability to cop someone else's licks/solo's. As evident of all the Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten clips.

The talent is having that solo be from your creative mind.
I could learn Tal's solo and post it up (no one would care as I look like a bigger/older version of Chris Daughtery and not a young player like the girl in the vid- BTW she's pretty good IMO).
That's where the separation in my mind begins.

Speaking of maybe, Maybe it's in Tal's contract in little tiny print that sez " If I work with you, you gotta let me sing one song and I get to choose it".

Maybe Herbie just didn't read that fine print and had that contract waved at him before they went on....

Maybe Herbie loves her voice and MY ear has gone to poop.

I don't know, I'm just giving my opinion.

My ears say ..."Why is she singing too?"....after I was thinking"Another Tal Wilkenfeld thread???"
In agreement with m ears I'd say "Just stick with playing bass",or "take some singing lessons perhaps.".
As is... I and my ears don't think trying to sing ,sing in public at that, was a good idea.


No disrespect!
