Yes. Sour grapes. There's a lot of them piling up in here.

So here you have a very talented, young player, already playing with jazz and rock legends. It's natural that those less talented and less fortunate will take cracks at her. It's the idea that cutting her head off will make you taller.

It may have nothing to do with less talented or jealousy (I hope).

Again, that young player is playing with the cream of the crop. So no, I don't think it's just dislike.

It's hard to tell from one song how deep her frontperson capabilites run. Based on what I saw, I think she did a fine job. One vid isn't enough to say whether she's on the level of a Sting, McCartney or Claypool in the frontperson dept., but it's a good performance. I certainly can't fault it.

Really?

As a big Jeff Beck fan I was impressed with Tal's bass playing long before I knew her name or read any of the billion TB threads about her. I don't dislike her in any way. I think she's a great bass player.

But that doesn't make her a good singer. She's certainly not bad and she sings well enough to add backing vocals which makes her an even more attractive session or gigging player but from what I saw and heard she's a great bassist and a passable singer. No shame in that.

And just because Herbie Hancock put this together doesn't change the fact that they made a muzak version of a protest song. It's a misfire on a few counts.

That's not jealousy, it's an honest critique of musicians that I hold in very high regard. But it wouldn't be a TB thread if any and all critiques weren't dismissed as jealousy either of someone else's ability, their stature in the music world, the records they've sold and/or money they've made.

But I can play along. Here's another remake by a young woman in the music industry. Remember that any criticism only shows how jealous you are of her.

I'm used to Herbie performing with singers the caliber of a Natalie Cole, Flora Purim, etc, so when he features Tal doing a vocal performance in a major hall, I guess I'm holding her to a high standard. Tal not being in the same class VOCALLY, not even close, then I might assume that she is being reduced to featured as a novelty vocalist. This novelty is based on her fame due to marketing her as an attractive young female TALENTED bassplayer, and that in itself is a novelty. She's a good player, and there's lots of good fuzak players.

Here's my concern:
If I pay big bucks to see Herbie, I have high expectations and don't want to see a novelty vocalist. I don't want today's current industry marketing standards lowering the bar for quality jazz performances. I've been around long enough to tell the difference between quality vocal chops and someone having a bad night, and from what I heard in the video, this wasn't a bad night.

Not at all. I guess it's just me, but I don't hear where she sang "badly". Phenomenally stupendous? No. In an acceptable musicianlike manner? My answer would be an unequivocal yes.

I wonder of anyone would rave about Tal if she was a fat ugly guy. There are tons of players who can play circles around her in regard to chops, groove, and feeling. I saw 400 of them on youtube today. Her singing was pleasant but she doesn't sound like a professional. Her gimick is that she is cute and can play competently. You don't see those together too often. LOL!

If she wasn't singing off key (sometimes easily corrected by vocal lessons to support the note...unless singing sharp and that's a bit more serious :( ),

anyway, if she wasn't singing off key I wouldn't have commented, unless to say " nice voice".

i LOVE Tal, but i believe she would tell you the truth about her vocals.:help:
i think HH is being a great motivator/mentor to this young prodigy!:help:
singing is the logical next step for her, IMHO.*

Go Tal,... keep up the greatness!!! :bassist:
