Tal Wilkenfeld on (2) Herbie Hancock Tracks

Herbie Hancock was on David Letterman tonight - they did the track from Imagine Project with Susan Tedeski and Derek Trucks. I'm not very famliar with Oteil Burbridge, but I believe that migth have been him playing bass with them.

James Genus is just a great, great player. He covers it all. He subbed for Patitucci on a Chick Corea tour (the one with Gary Novak and Bob Berg) on DB, and it was just stunning. And, he did all those Brecker Brother Reunion gigs... SMOKING on electric.

Saw James Genus with Herbie tonight in Buffalo NY. One word sums up his playing with the group. DAYUM!! I saw the opening night of the tour in June. Comparing opening night to a show two months later might not be exactly fair, but the band was so tight in comparison it wasn't funny. I don't know how long JG had to get this stuff down, but it seemed like he was there the whole two months. I love Tal's playing and I hope she's better soon, but JG just killed that material tonight!

Great to hear. I haven't heard James live since the Brecker Brothers reunion tour. He is just killer. I was looking forward to seeing Tal, but as a pure 'sideman', James is in another league IMO... among the best of the best. Cool!

What kind of tunes are they doing? Originally, it was supposed to be in support of the wonderful 'Imagine' CD, but of course, none of the vocalists/guest artists are touring with Herbie.

My ticket actually says 'A Tribute to Donald Byrd'. If that's the case, I assume James is playing DB?

Very confusing, this one:hmm:

Ken, They actually do most of the Imagine Project live. Kristina Train handles the lead vocals along with Greg Phillinganes. Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" shows off the two of them nicely. Tal was singing one tune, but now KT is singing lead on that as well. There are some sequenced backing tracks, but for the most part the vocals are all covered. James Genus did play DB on a couple of tunes last night. On a side note, the engineer at FOH is outstanding!
After looking at the tour schedule, you won't be seeing JG, but rather Pino will be on that show.

Thanks for the info. And... cool on Pino... I can live with that! I kind of fell off the Pino bandwagon a bit when he started using that P Bass... just doesn't do him justice. But... I'll live with it!

Ken, have you checked Pino's recording with PSP? Simon Phillips, Philippe Saisse & Pino Palladino, he's back to using the Musicman on it and it sounds great!




I dig his P-bass too though.;)
