Tal Wilkenfeld?

I've never heard of her, but just found a video of her jamming with Marcus Miller, then browsed through some other videos. She seems to have some pretty decent skill!
Is she somewhat famous, or is she rather unknown? Just curious as I've never heard of her but she seems to be playing with some bigger names (Marcus Miller as I said, I think Victor Wooten was there, another vid had her playing with Jeff Beck), plus she's releasing albums and whatnot.

She's fairly well known in the bass playing world, had a front cover on Bass Player magazine a while ago. She was on tour with Jeff Beck, last year I think it was. As well as having a solo album out, which is outstanding by the way. Not sure what she's been doing lately, I'm sure someone else more in the know can tell us.

Yeah I guess it would've made more sense to put it in Bassists.
Anyway, I'm interested in this CD, as the one song I heard sounded pretty interesting! I'll read through the past discussions.

She is great. You don't play with Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, and be releasing solo CD's are her age if you not hot.

Tal Wilkenfeld.

This brings up an interesting question that many of us "older" musicians wonder about from time to time.

I love both the young lady AND her playing. That being stated, how the hell (at 21-22) does she have the credentials that she has earned so quickly? Jeff Beck? Eric Clapton? Most of us "older" guys would give our right arms to have that sort of resume'.

Now, before you think me mean spirited, I am not. Just curious. I have had the pleasure of being a bass player for a bunch of years. In that time I have (literally) seen hundreds of musicians from guitar players, drummers, keyboard players (you get the idea) that I would have bet the farm that they would become "superstars".....but nuttin.....

As well, I realize that "the right time and the right place" come into play....I worked in Nashville for a number of years... I've seen dishwashers and busboys that could play rings around me at 12 but they never get the nod. additionally, we've all heard "those guys" that made us wonder "How the hell did THEY get signed!?!?" Pure head-scratcher...:D

I'm glad that the young lady has received the accolades she has for her work - she most definitely deserves it. However, I would probably bet the farm, that there are a BUNCH of well-qualified bassists right here on this forum (me being the possible exception!)

so, what is it? Is it the novelty that she is a young, beautiful bass player OR is it that she is a Bass Player that happens to be a young, beautiful lady?? Sort of makes me wonder.....

So, what's your take on this????

man...I don't even want to go there but....^^^^BINGO! And not to be sexist but the key is "she".

I have heard her. I am not anywhere near as accomplished musician as she is nor do I play or listen anything close to what she plays. But I am sure there are young GUYS her age who are as talented as her. Maybe I am selling her short but I do think that the novelty of a young, attractive female playing bass opened a lot of doors that would not be opened for a guy with the same talents etc.

Not bashing her and good for her to get all the recognition but something else other than talent might be happening here. :hiding:

I really hope this post comes off as respectful as it is meant to be and a not a whiny woe is me post which it most certainly is not.

I think you guys are maybe selling her a little bit short.
She's got what it takes. Plus she shows great promise with her writing too (not always the case with great players), which makes her more of a "complete package" in a way.
I'm happy for her success. Well, that's what I think anyway. YMMV and all that.:)

I think they're selling her a little short, too. I love her bouncy elastic style. However, there is no doubt in my mind that if she looked like Roseanne Barr that we wouldn't be hearing from her, at least not so soon. But you know what? Welcome to the music business. Image is everything, and there's nothing wrong with that IMHO.

Yeah, I totally get what your saying. But when you're that good....if she looked like Roseanne Barr, she could just put a bag over her head and use that as her image, kind of like that guitarist, Buckethead.;) :hiding:

So true, hence why I have no hope... unless people would pay to see an ogre play...

You forgot to mention connections in the industry. ;)
