Everything loads in seconds on my iPhone 4. I don't think the site carries a huge payload. How does Talkbass compare to other mobile sites on your device, say Link Removed ?

So Im on the laptop, and opened the site on my mobile to check. I timed it. The talkbass home page took 46 seconds to load. It took ten seconds to switch to this page (not toooo bad) once I got the 'alerts' drop down to open, which took a little while, but I forgot to time it. If I switch to a function page like "forums" that is just links to various sub forums those will load in about 5 seconds which is good enough, but content pages are in the 10 seconds range or more and shift around.

Once here I went to the BBC link on my mobile. It took 9 seconds to load on my mobile. That was surprising as it took longer than expected as things like NPR load in about 5 seconds. Links on the BBC page take anywhere from 8-11 seconds to load but they dont shift around on me and are usuable by 5 seconds.


btw, Im not gonna keep complaining or anything. Just wanted to chime in after a few days and give you feedback. It is what it is.. and its not the best thing in the world, but I dont live in Syria at the moment so life is OK.
I guess my suggestion, would be to integrate a "mobile dedicated" version that is slimmed down alot like many other websites do. BUT I admittedly have ZERO idea what that entails in time, effort, or expense so I would understand if that idea is a non starter... I understand you guys gotta do what you gotta do. Its probably WAAAAAY more a pain in your ass than mine and I wish you luck.

I'll continue to watch this thread for updates and yes, Ill still be on talkbass, I just wish I didnt feel like I was somehow on dial up. :P

I love talkbass. I have almost no complaints.

But please, please stop notifying me about this app being discontinued. I truly and deeply don't care. Please stop telling me. How much longer is the notification going to pop up?

Click the "dismiss notification" link. Don't click the X. I know it's not that intuitive, but the X is only temporary dismissal. The link will take it away for good.

The notification's going to stay up for a bit longer as people come back from winter break and wonder why the app isn't working.

I'm sorry, you probably already told me somewhere in this thread, but what network are you on when it takes that long to load (cellular, if so what network? or wifi, if so which isp).

Is your phone using the same network as your computer? If so I'm going to ask you to do some traceroutes.

Also, that Samsung Galaxy SII is almost 4 years old (unveiled Feb 2011) - can you get a new phone for free with a new 2-year contract? ;)

Im on my WiFi, which is the only way I usually use the internet... I have it at work, home, and most places I go.
I have comcast.
Btw... this time getting on with my mobile it took 71 seconds for the home page to load and getting to this page froze twice.

Unfortunately TMobile doesn't do the upgrade phone thing anymore. in fact, I think most companies are moving from that and deferring the cost of the phone over two years of bills. Which is why I have a 4 year old phone......plus, I take good care of my gear. ;-)

On most sites, except click bait sites, my phone works pretty fast. And on any dedicated mobile site i fly around as fast as I want.

Worst case is I only get on here once or twice a day...which would really help my addiction! ;-)

@eyeballkid Ok so just so I've got this right: Your laptop and your phone are both using the same comcast wifi. But the phone is taking 70+ seconds to load the homepage, and your laptop is much faster?

Traceroutes may be helpful. Even if your phone is 4 years old, it shouldn't take that long to render. If you're on a mac, open Network Utility and click the "Traceroute" tab:

If you're on windows, get to your command prompt (go to "run" and then type in "cmd", see http://www.chasms.com/chasms1/howdoi/ping_tracert/win8/ping.htm), and at the command prompt type "tracert www.talkbass.com".

After you're done tracing to www.talkbass.com, do the same for static.talkbass.com and paste the output here (or send me a PM).

There's 14 steps all with response times in milliseconds. Looks like the connectivity path is solid, its the formatting to the device. My laptop from the same ip address is fasty fast!

Im just answering here.... dont take this as more "complaint"

btw... the 71 seconds was probably the worst yet... but 30 seconds-ish is kinda average.

I added a few pixels of padding between the page links (I don't want to stretch it out too much, or it'll wrap to a second line), and 6px of padding above the "post reply" button - does this help a bit? Should be easier to hit "next" now...

I've been a web developer since 1998. Did some quick checks, and I can verify that while there are some things that could be improved,
there's nothing so bad that TB pages would take more than a few seconds to load on typical smart phones. And you're right; you can't please everyone. That said, I do think you guys would benefit from hiring a UX person to help with mobile UX -- it's not terrible by any means, but there's room for improvement, and a UX designer could at least help address the biggest issues.

Agreed. In general talkbass is fast-enough. I haven't had an issue with the site on my tablet or phone. I also agree on the UX, sometimes it bugs me a little, but still totally usable.
If nothing changed to the site I'd still totally use it.

I always use https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http://www.talkbass.com&tab=mobile to see if there are any low-lying fruit to help with performance.
