You are focusing on the user interface. Don't.
The reasons for the upgrade was the platform, which the user interface is part of.
Talkbass had to upgrade the platform, which would eventually crash and burn. Eventually all the bandaid to keep it running on modern server operating system would stop holding together, the browsers would stop supporting the libraries used for the user interface and I suspect that the great fire of 2021 also might have had an influence on all this - disaster recovery is generally easier on newer platforms.
All that, off course, would only be relevant if a bad actor hadn't taken down the site in a scripted attempt to get a ransom payout.
So, the makeover did not happen to make you mad. It happened to keep the site running with more modern tools at disposal.
Compare it to upgrading your desktop operating system. You CAN of course keep running windows 7, but at you own risk. Talkbass COULD keep running at XenForo 1.5, but at their own risk.
Where I work, in the financial sector, some very old, unsupported systems, are kept alive, because they make more money than it costs to keep them running in a secure way. And it costs a LOT of money for those systems.
I suspect that Talkbass does not generate that kind of money.
We can hope that the user interface stabilizes, but I don't see that Talkbass had any other options than to upgrade.
The problem with running old software is that it becomes a security risk. The site owner clearly said the previous version was from 2017. That was 7 years ago. Software makers stop providing security patches and other updates for older versions, which makes an upgrade mandatory. We either adapt or we don't.
Maybe hat's because I'm using an android phone. Maybe that's because I'm not yet used to it.
But navigation is really cumbersome with this upgrade.
In particular navigating in the forum arborescence is really bad... I don't know yet about other features.
This being said, many thanks to Paul and people helping him to make this incredible resource available to the community. That's internet at its best!

Not updating would create another whole slew of problems that in the long run (and even in the more near term) would be more detrimental.
Nice work approximating the old UI, seriously impressive that there's this much parity while upgrading to a new codebase.
Seeing a lot of griping about what has changed; and yes while I'm experiencing similar variations and unexpected behaviors compared to the old site (oooh boy those parallax ads...), I hope the benefits will soon outweigh the gripes you may temporarily experience. I have no ties to this site other than as a user (who happens to work in UX/UI), but a friendly reminder that your data and safety on the site is more important to protect than your stake in a legacy interface. I hope you can all adjust to the shift like we all did in 2017...give it a few days or weeks and hopefully we can come to enjoy the site as before!

Coming from the perspective of a pc gamer used to waiting at least a week after any major update to let the dust settle before making any judgement, that's exactly what I suggest all the complainers here do.
It's been made clear that the update to the system was long overdue and necessary. Let's give Paul and his team time to iron out the teething problems.

Some people are capable of distinguishing change for the worse from change for the better, and of judging, and acting, accordingly. Just an observation.

Who's this guy Mark Unread that keeps sending me goofy rewards?
I am just a low level amateur bass enthusiast using this site for international mingling, by checking new posts and posting if I feel I have something to contribute. On my devices talkbass still looks like talkbass and it seems that whatever has been done under the carpet has been done with respect for users also to "feel at home" in the upgraded environment. Thank you for that !!!
