I’m actually in the opposite boat- I came to bass from the cello. Occasionally I do return to it but it’s not now my comfort zone.

My cello is a cheap beginners instrument - probably not worth the investment until (or if) I get something decent.

Get some peg paste if you haven't got any and you'll find the more you use the tuners the easier they get to use.

If you're not used to those tuning pegs they can be a pita. These are on UK eBay but I'm sure they're available in the US as well: Cello geared tuners

Again - not an expert - but I believe the planetary geared tuning pegs are a simple replacement for the friction pegs you already have. I think you could even move them over to another instrument if you wanted to upgrade.

Taking the liberty of resurrecting this thread, as today I had my first cello lesson! I got hold of a rental instrument a few weeks back and have been playing pretty much all pizzicato, just trying to get a feel for the fingerboard, and today was my first real attempt at learning how to hold the bow.

Obviously very early days, and today was a good reminder of how much I have to learn, but it's exciting to be under way on this new challenge. The whole right-arm/right-hand/fingers arrangement will definitely take some getting used to, as does the need to keep multiple fingers in place on the fingerboard, but hopefully it'll fall into place with time and practice.

This discussion provided a LOT of good background and encouragement, so thanks to all you participants for that!


P.S. — So.....what rosin is best for metal?
