I had a job once selling home smoke and fire detectors. There was a flipboard presentation that had pictures of kids badly disfigured by fire. This was the point in the schpiel that were suppose to tell the mark "If you love your family.....". I quit after my 2nd appointment. Though I did make 1 sale.

I think OP is saying that if you have to talk someone into buying a bass, perhaps you shouldn’t sell it to them at all? I think? But isn’t that why we buy anything in the first place? Because we were talked into it? Even if we’re the ones talking ourselves into it? If I can talk you into buying something, doesn’t that make me a good salesman?

My best interpretation- If you don't talk someone into not buying your bass, your not going to not sell it, but not sell to the person you are not selling it to.

I agree, but I tend to go in the other direction. If someone is reluctant for a valid reason, I typically suggest that they shouldn’t buy the bass. However, if someone is on the fence about a bass for a particular reason, and I’m confident the concern they have about it is unfounded, I will explain why I think they would like the instrument. Bottom line, I’d generally rather not sell a bass than sell it to someone I believe will be unhappy with it. Of course, my thinking might be different if I sold basses for a living.
