I read an old Bass Player Magazine shootout of strings long ago. They tried all kinds of strings, and their findings often lined up with mine.
Their opinion on tapered strings was mixed. As was mine. I had to do a bit of setup work to change to them. That's fine. Some other things. But, mostly they commented about a slight loss of vibration transfer to the bridge, which resulted in a bit of low end loss. They intonated well, but on some basses I could never quite get the feel I had back with traditional strings. However, on some basses they were spectacular. Warwicks. Fretless basses...
At that time, a whole lot of makers produced tapered strings. Virtually all the big makers. I think most still make some form today. D'Addario has a custom set of ProSteels. DR has some. Dean Markley SR2000 Will Lee set. Ken Smith Master Series. Warwick, I believe, still makes them. I think GHS made strings for Carvin, those might be best. And the LaBella Super Steps. Those are Exposed Core, not tapered. A bit different. I used Super Steps on ALL my Warwick basses. The best, by far. But they are Steel. And a bit course in feel. My fingers got used to them. RotoSound also used to make them, but I don't know if they continue.
At this point, I prefer Traditional winds. No work to get em right. But back in a day I tried them all! Some sets aren't around anymore. Yamaha and Trace Elliot, and Peavey, made great sets of strings. All Tapered.
I'd go to Fretnation or Juststrings websites and look around. I think there will be plenty of options. Tho I do seem to see more Steel sets than Nickel Plated. I'm not sure why.
