Tapping

K my basses have a pretty moderate action which works fairly well with slap and lately Ive desired to really want to tap.
It just doesnt sound GOOD tho. Not that Im incapable of learning it even pulling off some basic stuff but it seems that the action is so high off the fretboard that by the time the strings hit and the effort put in happens I get nothing but a thud.

Is there a way to help this out mechanically or do you just need like a REALLY good bass to get a good tap sound.
