TB Guitar Thread....No Basis Here...

All good stuff. Keep it coming.

I need to get a better steel string acoustic.

If you had $500, what would you get? Open to used as well.

I've heard Carvin's acoustics are very good for the cash, I'd be all over the mahogany topped one if I wanted an acoustic.

Ive played a few Cort acoustics, I remember them being pretty good too.

Some of the middle of the road Martins and Taylors are great as well as the better ones used. They have laminated tops etc but are solid guitars. I played a tanglewood the other day and it was also nice around $400.00. Breedloves are pretty good in your price range too.

i've been playing both guitar and bass equally poorly since i was about 14. seriously, unless you are an acoustic upright only player, bass and guitar are not that different. you don't really see the key guys arguing between organs, synths, and pianos that much. I know horn players that will rip on anything with a spit valve (and generally anything you blow through).

i currently have a pair of Epi LP's ... my '03 studio ex-goth, bought for the black hardware, and turned out to be a great player. still needs a good setup and fret level though.

in the hardshell case is my '96 standard, originally purple sparkle, aged to a funky pink. cream hardware from this one swapped out with the goth's black, really neat effect. makes the goth look way less dumb, more of a tuxedo in flat black. the '96 has a pretty bad neck twist, but my guy says he can get it straight without much trouble, it will just take time. and $$ i dont have to spare right now.

sorry i can't post pix - i gave up my domain name this summer, and lost my hosting. times are tough.

I would recommend anything from the Godin factory in Canada.
I have owned a number of Seagulls over the years, and they are great bang for the buck. They sell under the brand Art & Lutherie as well. Might be others too. I think of them as a Canadian acoustic version of Matsumoku factory.

I have a 1970ish Guild D25 that I have a real affinity for. A decent used one should be around $500. Mahog back, side and top. Nice rich tone from this one.

In terms of other guitars, I currently have in the fold:

1960's Kay Archtop
1986 Kramer Baretta
1993 Gibson LP Studio
1994 Seagull S6 CW
199? Alvarez 12
2008 Ovation Celebrity

I started playing guitar a couple of years ago. I found it to be a rather difficult transition but I really enjoy it.

Last year I purchase a wonderful LAG acoustic. Even though it was an inexpensive model and also used, it had such a wonderful open sound that I dropped a seymour duncan mag mic in it so I can record with it. Everything I have done with it sounds great and I love it to death.

My electric is a schecter tempest custom that I got a great offer on ebay. This one is also really good for its price. I have to admit that it is a little generic sounding and that the ballance is a little weird(I am really spoiled from playing bass) but it does what I want it to do.

At some point I would love to get a tele as well but this will have to wait since I would prefer to get some other stuff first(like a real guitar amp perhaps? Man I am really drooling over these JVMs)

Needless to say playing guitar has helped my bass playing and my singing(if you can call that singing) immensely. So it is something that I definitely recommend to everyone to try. I also play ukulele which is really fun.

But the point is DRUMS. Can I talk about that here or will I get banned for life? I will take my chances. DRUMS ROCK!!!

Since I was a kid, my father has owned a Gibson ES-120, Gibson Banjo, and a Gibson Falcon amp. So, I've always had a soft spot for Gibson guitars but personally haven't quite felt the same about their basses, with a few exceptions (the G3 and the Les Paul Standard Oversized Bass.) If I was to buy any guitar, it would be a Les Paul.

I played guitar before bass, but haven't played guitar on stage in almost 20 years. Now, I mostly play for enjoyment, but occasionally for writing, arranging, or coming up with guitar ideas for bandmates.

I have two wonderful Strats. The first is an alder/maple 2004 American Series, which has Lace Sensor Hot Gold pickups with the high output bridge that's wound to 13.2k. These pickups are fantastic, and the guitar has amazing presence. It almost cuts through too much. A year later, I picked up a NOS 2001 American Series HH hardtail, alder rosewood. It came stock with Seymour Duncan humbuckers, and has a five way selector with these settings: (1) bridge humbucker, both coils; (2) one coil from each pickup, for some "quack"; (3) both 'buckers on full; (4) one coil of neck pickup; (5) neck pickup, both coils. Guitars don't get much more versatile, and it has classic vintage 'bucker tone.

I also have an old Washburn acoustic, and a Roland Cube 60 amp, which lives mostly at my band's rehearsal space in case one of our guys' tube amps goes down.

Then there's the guitar GAS, which is mostly for a good tube amp like a Mesa Express 5:25, but also for an assortment of G&L guitars and maybe a good Les Paul.

I played guitar first, but I'm not a bass player because I'm a frustrated guitarist; I needed bass to play countermelodic bass lines to my guitar parts. Used to design and build guitars as a hobby and went through a lot. I've paired it down a bit now:

Alvarez 12- String acoustic
Tacoma Cheif 6-string acoustic
Yamaha strat copy
Brian Moore iGuitar, dual humbucker with piezo pickups for acoustic option and built-in MIDI sensors. I knew when I moved to Hawaii the space would be small, so I had one guitar to do everything: acoustic, electric and keyboards!
Also have a mandolin.

I LOVE playing funk guitar, and I've gotten my current bandmate hooked on it also... which helps out set list. For those of you who might want to try that, there's a great teacher for it I found on YouTube... lessons are simple and progression is fast and he doesn't ramble on and 'overteach'. Introductory video here, the rest are on the YT page:

Rhythmology Funk Lesson Part 1 - YouTube

I also have to second E.J.T.N.T.: Drums ROCK!! If I had my druthers I druther be a drummer.

Hands down, a Walden. Small company that won't sell to mass-marketers, so the profile is low. But they're insanely well designed AND well made oriental imports. Nice selection of woods, and for really great prices. Invalid Link Removed

Can you elaborate on that? Anything they blow through? Have you ever dated a sax or trumpet player? Can you please give us some feedback?

dated, no. however i started my musical journeys in the 5th grade on sax.

one of my old friends was a sax player, that also played flute, some trumpet, a bit of trombone, and guitar.

i guess my point is, that most horn players tend to start as band geeks, and are mostly classically trained, and therefore less opposed to cross-instrumental wanderings than self taught or tutor taught like most guitar or bass players.

I have five basses and one electric guitar. I played guitar for ten years before I picked up the bass, and I play harp and Dobro. Anyhow, here's the one and only:

right before the black DR's went on ... and then it went into the case till i can afford to fix the neck twist. you can really see the original purple color in the pickguard shadow. it's the same under the knobs and the chip.

i wish i had a pic handy of the studio how it looks now. the cream and chrome HW make it look way better. currently has a set of pink DR heavies on it.

I've started playing more guitar. My friends and I started a band, but three of us are bassists so I've been relegated to lead guitar.

Got a Seagull acoustic that stays in tune for months at a tine, a Washburn Rover travel guitar (fun, and my oldest who is 7 likes to play it), and a Epiphone Les Paul 2 electric.

I've found that it has upped my bass playing quite a bit, fwiw.

I'm in! I love plying guitar almost as much as playing bass, I dont have a pic of my rig but I use a heavily modded Dean Caddillac X, put a Jackson Floyd Rose on it, new pots and tuners. And a set of GFH power rails, and a Les Paul pickguard. My amp is a Marshall JCM 600 head w/ a JCM 900 A cab. Bass will always be my one true love, thanks for starting this thread, I've been waiting 4 something like this.
