TC Cabinets 2 2x12s or...?

Hey everyone!

So I have a couple of questions. Im getting a BH500 head later this week and I'm getting two cabs to go with it, either two 2x12s or one 2x12 and a 2x10, I definitely wont get the 4x10. The cabs will be the TC BH series.

I'm curious as to what people think, are 12 inch cabinets more versatile? or are they just muddy?

I play in a few bands, a blues band(which I play double bass through an amp as well as electric), a function/wedding band and a couple of rocky proggy things. I'm looking for versatility so I can really nail the low end but with punch at times too and so I can use the cabs with any work I might do.

Some tones I like to use are Rush(snakes and arrows sound), Incubus(both Science and make yourself tones) and a round fat bass tone.

If you've decided on these boxes for sure, what you really want is to listen to the 210 & 212 separately. Decide which you prefer. Double up on it. Two 210s or two 212s. Mixing cabs with different size drivers is always a crapshoot. If you like them equally & have the wherewithal, go with the 212s simply because they'll move more air.

I would go with matched cabs for response/phase matching. The BH500's 350 watts isnt going to hurt any 4 of their drivers.

Mixing cabinets isn't always a crapshoot...as with the TCE RS, where mixing is suggested by the manufacturer and there are plenty of people who have tried it before you. That said, I've never tried the BC series or followed the marketing of that line or posts from users.

To the degree that the BC cabs are (presumably) similar to the RS cabs in that respect, I think it really depends on why it is you feel you'd want one of each. Are there times that you'd really only want to use the 210 (for its size, weight and loudness), time that you'd want/need to take the step up to the 212, and times that the 212 couldn't cut it alone? To my thinking and experience, that's a scenario that calls for one of each.

I had various configurations (over time) of up to 3 each RS210s and RS212s. With some time in, I found that a single RS212 gave me the greatest utility for the things I was doing. And by that time, I had an Uber410 for my bigger rig.

If you're interest comes from assumptions about one cabinet's sound qualities versus another, I don't think that's a scenario that really calls for mixing. That's what EQ is for. Get your punch from EQ. Remove muddiness with EQ.

My experience (again with RSs, not BCs) was that the 210 and 212 were probably more similar than they were different, inside the margins. The 212 could get louder and, in that greater loudness, it could produce more punch, and be smoother, fatter, more round.
