TC Electronic RH750 ???!??

I use the footswitch a lot, as an overdrive pedal. I have one setting with much more tubetone than the other. Also for mute & tuning & switching basses. The third preset is for fretless, emphasizing 800Hz. Almost all of this could be done by walking over and pressing a button instead, except any mid-song overdrive / clean channel, which I do take advantage of.
 
This is pretty much pointless as results will vary a LOT between basses, cabs, rooms etc. Not to mention that my idea of bright and modern might differ from yours. :)

Anyway, here's the setting I currently use for my Status Energy:

Thanks for posting there, 4-string. I think "pretty much pointless" probably overstates the limitations on the usefulness.

It's completely useful in meeting the goal of hearing what your settings sound like, to me, using my gear. Whether it sounds the same to me as it does to you is another matter (and a logical impossibility to know). Fact is my amp will function precisely the same way your amp does given the same settings. The other factors are other factors. There will be similarities and differences in effect.

Given 8 controls with 25 discrete positions each (only including tone and frequency midpoints), there are actually a mind-boggling number of permutations. Considering the full range of adjustment, the chances of winning the lottery are better than the chances of landing on the same settings as someone else. And some of the factors that impact the ultimate effect are counter-intuitive, so trying for certain things may be hopeless.

Regarding getting a 'clean' tone, there was another user who felt he had discovered (if I understood correctly) that the dirty, wooly tone came from having significant cross-over in the the boosting of frequencies.

Without even dealing with how it sounds, it's interesting that you've set your bass to 400Hz and lo-mid to 250Hz and you're boosting both. You've effectively made your lo-mid your 'bass' control and made the bass the 'lo-mid' control, but it's shelved. Wow :confused:

Who cares? ;) I set it where I like it, and then tend to forget it. However, I do adjust the highs on the RH750 depending on the room, and how far away from the rig I'm standing.
 
No. I set it that way when I got it back in May/June, and haven't touched it since (except for minor tweaks of the treble and tweetertone).

I agree that it is weird, but don't remember how I ended up with those settings. I only spent a couple of minutes setting eq for three basses, so it's not as if it is some kind of philosophy behind it. ;)

However, I have been happy enough to leave it alone for 7 months so I'm happy. :)

It may be unconventional, but it makes some sense -- everything below 400 Hz slightly boosted, with a small extra "hump" centred at 250 Hz. It's a good reason for having a potentially large overlap between shelving and "normal" EQ ranges.

I'm not pretending to be some kind of EQ guru (I am evidently not!;), but I don't find it hard to dial in some good, modern tone from the RH750 at all. In fact, despite the baked in voicing I think it is a very, very versatile head. Between the EQ, tweetertone, compressor and tubetone I can find whatever I am looking for with ease.

For the "leave all knobs at noon" crowd there are probably better options though. But EQ is there to be used, and I have a feeling that some people who dismiss the TC heads based on tone don't really dig into the EQ enough, but base their judgement on a flat or close to flat setting.

Do you have any experience with the RH450? And if so, would you mind giving your impressions of the differences (if any beside the obvious volume and features) between the 450 and the 750? I'm most interested in the comparative voicing of the amps and the way they behave when pushed to higher volumes...

Pardon me if you've posted this somewhere already... if so, then just point me to a link or turn me in the right direction. Thanks!
 
I posted some RH750 freq. response curves in summer, just when BassGearMagazine published theirs for the RH450.

They were for my own use, when I saw "They look the same or very similar" I stopped tracing curves and started playing.

Someone mentioned identical boost / cut, identical frequencies (most probably identical "Q's", but slightly different factory default settings. I mean in one of the heaads, maybe 750, factory reset defaults are not at noon, but with controls at noon responses are identical. IME if not identical, they look very similar

EDITED, ...With tweetertone in the middle. The reason I measured responses was to determine what tweetertone does (there was a lot of debate at the time). 4-string reminded me

First I would start by turning the preset volume to 3:00 max but I like 12:00 to start and only boost over if I find a big shift from one channel to the next . That will allow for more eq work without overloading the input to the master as that will cause the amp to breakup. For the rest of the settings I see were you're at thumping low low-mid feel that also works like at cut at 800hz and some sizzle. I'm a fan of 1.6hz for treble or the center dot then boost 2-3 with the tweeter tone to the same level you have. Gives me the crisp tone without too much harshness. What is the compressor and the tube tone set to? I've found the tube tone realy does alter the way the eq opperates.
 
I thought it might be good to review this again:
It shows this in the manual:

Gain and Frequency Ranges
Bass Freq range: 71 Hz to 1120 Hz (default: 200)
Bass Gain range: -24 dB to +15 dB (Shelving type)

Low Mid Freq range: 100 Hz to 1600 Hz (default: 400)
Low Mid Gain range: -24 dB to +15 dB (Fixed 2.1 oct.)

High Mid Freq range: 200 Hz to 3150 Hz (default: 800)
High Mid Gain range: -24 dB to +15 dB (Fixed 2.1 oct.)

Treble Freq range: 400 Hz to 6300 Hz (default: 4000)
Treble Gain range: -24 dB to +15 dB (Shelving type)

So based on that and the reset info, I am suspecting this:

Default bass = -3 on knob = 200hz
Default Low Mid = Noon on knob = 400hz
Default High Mid = Noon on knob = 8000hz
Default High = +8 on knob = 4000hz

Yah I have that printed out and sitting next to the head. Also found the eq curves from bassgear magazine that was done on the rh450 really helped me understand the way the low and high pass filters work with the shelving bass and treble and the curve for the low and high mids. I do no eq from my bass cause I do use all three channels so any change to the bass eq makes it harder to switch between dif tones.
 
Since looking at this I think my bass and low-mid were around the same frequency, so I moved the lo-mid up a few notches. But what I find is I'm not changing much anyway. I'm only moving bass, lo-mid and hi-mid one click no matter where the EQ points are. The biggest changes are in the high end I see with the treble and tweetertone. I likes my zing.
