TC Electronic RH750 ???!??

hmm, when I do a factory reset and then press Shift-button the default EQ is not at noon on all knobs even though I saved them at 12 o clock before the reset :confused:
This was discussed a while back. The default EQ points on the RH750 are different than the RH450. The RH450 is all EQs on center, and the RH750 is varied from that a bit.

This is normal.

-3 steps on Bass, +8 on Treble, all other Noon.

It shows this in the manual:

Gain and Frequency Ranges
Bass Freq range: 71 Hz to 1120 Hz (default: 200)
Bass Gain range: -24 dB to +15 dB (Shelving type)

Low Mid Freq range: 100 Hz to 1600 Hz (default: 400)
Low Mid Gain range: -24 dB to +15 dB (Fixed 2.1 oct.)

High Mid Freq range: 200 Hz to 3150 Hz (default: 800)
High Mid Gain range: -24 dB to +15 dB (Fixed 2.1 oct.)

Treble Freq range: 400 Hz to 6300 Hz (default: 4000)
Treble Gain range: -24 dB to +15 dB (Shelving type)

So based on that and the reset info, I am suspecting this:

Default bass = -3 on knob = 200hz
Default Low Mid = Noon on knob = 400hz
Default High Mid = Noon on knob = 8000hz
Default High = +8 on knob = 4000hz

As Jarrett points out, it is in the manual, BUT, it's not obvious what's happening, which is why it became a point of discussion here.

What's not obvious is what each "click" represents, so they don't really translate the default settings to what you would see on the display. The only way to do this is to do a factory reset.

What I did is store a preset with those settings so I can always have a "base" setup and two others, and I can always get back to defaults without losing the other presets to a factory reset.

Putting my cynical hat on, and looking at the default settings on the 750, my guess is they set it up with a bit more extended range EQ'd in (i.e., smooth that lower mid/upper bass peak, and goose the top end a bit) so that it would sound a bit different from the 450 right out of the box, or when directly compared at a music store.

Not really sure why anyone would care about saving a default setting myself. Probably a better 'starting point' is just everything at noon IMO.

Hmm. Considering that it's the tone controls' center frequencies that were tweaked, I don't see how that would make the RH750 sound different "right out of the box." You'd have to adjust the controls' gain for any of them to be engaged.

I think you're right about why they altered the defaults (given some EQ boost/cuts of course), but how much those defaults matter are completely subjective.

"Why I care" is because I consider that to be their "recommended base tone", so I just think it's handy to have as a reference point... especially since I do like it better as a starting point than everything at noon. Just personal choice as always... YMMV. :)

Ahhh, well, I'm leaving the wattage thing behind, as I think it's been so incredibly overworked at this point, and personally, I don't think this minor ambiguity is the same thing at all. IMHO anyway.

Thing is, if you know the range, and you know the centers, does it REALLY matter if you know each click? If so, even though I wouldn't necessarily assume linearity, a simple calculation would probably get you close enough for rock and roll.

I can literally not think of one case where I need a specific graduated scale for EQ. I just need the range and center, to give me a ballpark. The rest, I use my ears for.

And, it is pretty easy to map out the frequencies with pretty good accuracy. Even many analog semi-parametric EQ's don't have the exact frequencies marked.

All you need to do is take the lowest frequency and double it. Now, keep doubling each of the frequencies until you reach the maximum published frequency (it should be pretty close).

So, with the low band of the TC amps:

1136 (close enough).

That gives you a pretty good map to what is impacted at equal intervals, in this case at full counterclockwise, 9 o'clock, noon, 3 o'clock and full clockwise.

Edit: This gives you precision at the octave level. It is, of course, easy to take this to half octave also.

I don't get the fuzz. If you lack a litle tone somewhere - do you then Think "i want to lift the frequencies around 642,3 hz ??? Guess not- you'll use your ears, and these controls works great for just that.....

I agree in general, and given the relatively wide Q of the RH series semi-parametric controls, going much beyond a half octave in precision is a bit of a losing game.

However, with four bands of semi-parametric EQ, it is kind of nice, for me at least, to have a rough feel for where some of the key frequencies that we bassists often mess with (e.g., 125, 250, 500, 1K, 2K, 4K) are in general on the dials.

I agree though, small thing, which is probably why most companies, including TC, just give you a range.

It is also nice when A/Bing the amp to another with fixed EQ bands. Makes it easier to do a somewhat apples to apples comparison, but of course, this too is more a 'gear head' thing that anything that will change your life on the gig.:)

I can occasionally think "I'll boost around 500 hz", but no, NEVER 642,3

There is an excellent "per-dot" chart of all the tone control frequency centers somewhere in the RH450 thread. One of the TBers calculated it, and TCE confirmed that they were correct. If you have trouble finding it, I can scan and email a copy.

It helped me think through the tone control settings I'm using for my RH750 (which I'm really happy with).
