Mine is from 1996. Sold under Kaman ownership, which wasn't all that long?
Did you find a tube? where?

What's the tin hat over the toroid for? Protect it from the rain? I stand by the humungousness of the 1200!

The tin hat must be to keep stray fingers out of the unseen abyss that would be found other wise. JK...
I believe its a grounding shield and less of mount clamp for holding it in place... I have not taken mine apart to find out. Remember I said ."NO TOUCHY" :eyebrow:

The tin hat is for mounting purposes only. Toroidal transformers have very low magnetic emission/leakage. Being a toroid there are no mounting brackets so it has to be clamped to the chassis, and those things are heavy. To spread the load on the windings there is a large rubber washer each side of the toroid, between it and the chassis and it and the tin hat.

here are the pictures.
As you can see, on the back there is a "7210H", whereas on the transformer "AH200L".

And no tube.

What is it then, and what are the technical data? 200W 8Ohm?

Cheers!

Sergio.

Hey, guys.

I've been following this thread, even though I don't play TE anymore. I had a great TE rig in the '90s; thought I might show it off here.

I had the GP12XV pre-amp, a 500W power amp (the model number escapes me), a 2x15, a 4x10, and a 4x5 bright box. The only other thing that was in the signal chain was a dbx 160XT compressor.

As you can see, it was awesome...

I figure I'll get back into Trace at some point; I've never had (or heard) a better rig.

:bassist:

Not that I'm a major authority, but I've gotten the impression that there may not always be such a thing as a 'normal' Trace head...there seem to be minor variances in at least some of each model/type/designation thingy. OK, so a tube, or lack of, isn't a minor variance but you see where I'm going here with this, right?

Which is why I'm still playing my 1995 vintage AH350SMX rig. I've not been able to find anything I like better.

Very nice rig you had there by the way, cool picture.
Thanks, RobJ.

I think that picture shows just how much I enjoyed the sound.
:D

I never needed any PA support with that rig - it was incredibly loud. I wish I hadn't had to sell it, but I needed to downsize when that band broke up.

Did the pre-Gibson models have the tube?
Did Gibson era models omit the tube and go all SS?
Or did you have to get above a certain wattage amp to get the tube option?
1. Yes
2. No. They had both.
3. When Trace started making hybrid heads they were 300 watts or larger. I personally have never seen nor heard of anything smaller with a hybrid preamp other than the "Valve" series of amps (Twin, Quatra, and HexaValve).

Same here. I love my RAH350SMX. When it came to selling one of my Trace Elliot amps the QuatraValve went and the SMX stayed! The SMX with 1524 cab and Bright Box is heaven to my ears! :bassist:

My RAH250 GP12 SMX has a 12AX7 valve blended preamp. It's a 1996 production date. The valve really warms it up.

I really should put my voltmeter on it sometime. No doubt it the thing punches well above its weight. The other day I ran a power amp which pushes into clipping at 35 volts and it was nowhere near as loud as the trace with the same cab. 35V at 8 ohm is 150W "RMS"

Yeah I bet you didn't. I find my rig with 1X15 and 2x10 Trace cabinets cover most gigs I play where there's not a PA big enough to handle bass and drums, so it's a really great size for me.
