Team Trace Elliot pt4.

Iirc Kaman were kinda caretaker owners, continuing the previous work, not changing things up.

I wish I could find a $70 tolex 1518 taking up space at the Salvation Army store. I'd give it a good home too!

Oh, and thanks for the info bit there on Kaman!

True enough this stuff is floating around here. I remember being at Berklee for a year in Boston, and the Series 6 models were appearing in the hands of a privileged few hot-shots. There does seem to be a cache of these old boogers left by those who moved on, somehow... I'm homing in on a Series 6 as we speak. Hey, I might need a back-up!

I'll keep an eye out for you if you're looking...

Ok. Here's the newest 1518 cab.

And here it is in the rig. Bottom left. Looks like it needs more cleaning but I think it's a different color on the grill.
This configuration is HALF the config that the AH1200SM can handle. this is a 2ohm load on Channel 1. Channel 2 is empty right now.

I like those 1518s. I'm using an old Bag End 18 cab with a temp baffle I put on for a 15 (Carvin PS-15), and some styrofoam to reduce the internal volume a little, until I can get my re-coned JBL back.

A 15 in a big box can be a really cool sound.
Yes it does,,, just ask the neighbors!!!

Shipping is tough, yes. I may have to send the 350SMX off to BAS too,for some small items, plus that tube channel that's not functioning. Tried a "new" tube, no change. Gonna try one more first... but honestly I don't think I care yet! The ss channel is killin' it for me.

Ha, and my neighbors too...

Only halfway.:atoz: From a sound engineering perspective it's a fool's errand but I'd still like to hear / feel it up close and personal :) Is there enough Trace gear in your neighbourhood to pull off the best get together ever?

Do you notice a difference running it 4 ohm per channel? I'm curious if the legendary thump is there at 2 ohms. What a monster, hard to compare thump with wallop I suppose. Industrial earmuffs or wireless from across the street?

I got that nonworking AH300 GP12 smx head that I scored a few months ago, back from the amp tech yesterday.
I had the non working Bipolar Bear output section removed, and swapped out the big toroid transformer for a smaller one, and then had it rewired as a dedicated preamp.
I now have a silent running GP12smx preamp in the home studio setup. :D

There is enough in the USA. Shipping is easy but about 125.00 on average.
Being picky and finding only the carpet models with accessible ports is a bit more difficult bit doable.
I just couldn't pass up a 70 dollar TE cab. And it works fine.

It's louder at 2 ohms than 4 obviously but at 2 ohms it's running at optimum and free like an open water hose.
I'd have to set it up out side in the back yard to really feel it. I have a 40 x 80 back yard and the bass sound wave fully develops at 30.
No earmuffs needed. Love that gut rumbling feel of the bass.

I must say thi V Type 600h head KEEPS impressing each time i use it WOW why dont they make these anymore??

I brought a Commando 15 combo to a tech once for a clean-up. He remarkd, "It's a Commando! They don't make these anymore. That's because it doesn't suck. If it doesn't suck they stop making them".

The remark was employing the rhetorical/general "They". I think he's right, for the most part.

what are the better cabs Trace makes?

1153 is a 115 that's proven popular. The [DEL]1048[/DEL] (got that wrong- I forget the number now...) is alleged to be a slammer of a 215, tho' heavy-ish.

I had a 210 that was ok... and a 1518 1115 that was very nice- big, full and growly. I more recently had an older 1048 410. Solid, very nice. And heavy... which is ok. But it is.

Nowadays there are more offerings and a wide range of efficient cabs that stand a bit forward of the old Trace cabs. But they're still very good in their own right, which is how I do my shopping. I've been at this awhile and my ear is tuned to what I like, so you don't see me running after the new shiny stuff.

For my money, if you can find used Bag End stuff you're killing it. And I'm building a cab for a JBL E-155 118 driver that's going to be for the AH350SMX I recently came upon.

But the Trace pedigree is fun, and sounds just ducky. You can't really go wrong with any of their cabs actually.

Most common cabs are...
1153 compact 15"
1028 compact 2x10 match for 1153
1518 full size 15" Comes in carpet or tolex
1548 huge 4x15" rare I've seen one
1528 full size 2x15
1048 full size 4x10 comes in carpet or tolex
1088 8x10 comes in carpet or tolex.

H designates w/Fostex Horn.

There are some others
15 + 10
15+4x10 - the BFC. Pairs with the iirc AH1000-12.
