Team Trace Elliot pt4.

ok, I figured how to upload pics. (i think) This is the RAH500 that I got recently.

My tech guys still havent figured out the fault and I've emailed BAS but not received any response from them.

Amp is great, but wish I could get the input problem fixed

Yeah it's fantastic, (apart from the fault I cant seem to get fixed)

I missed out on a Hexavalve model a while back - just couldnt scrape the cash together.

In hindsight, it's probably a good thing, since the Hexavalve head weighed over 40KG's. But damn, I bet it would have sounded great!!

Very happy so far with my rig. The cabinet came with the head, so I'm really happy with that. Only one gig with it so far but that was on very small stage. Got another next weekend, so hopefully more stage room that will allow me to really crank it!

Lol... don't hurt yourself! Nice rig. I love my 350SMX... I am also now a little tempted to start looking for a nice old 810. There's a '71 for cheap on CL...

That cabinet is not an 810 - it's actually a 6x10 with a horn. I think 8 x 10 cabinet would kill me lifting it in and out the vehicle.
The 610 sounds great tho - especially with the horn attenuator. Until now I've only ever used cabinets without horns mostly, but the attenuator on back of this really is a great feature.
The cab is only 600Watts, but it does sound good.

Can I interest you in membership?

What is the fault?

Membership? for sure. I'll read up on what is involved (costs etc)

The problem is kind of simple in theory, but needs a bit of a long winded explanation - i'm sorry.

So here goes with my fault/problem explanation .....

I have been using a Trace Elliot Series 6 for about 20 years and have grown accustomed to their tone but wanted more power.

Recently I was lucky enough to pick up through ebay bigger 500 watt TE for a great price. It’s an older RAH500 but I believe the series that came out after Series 6. It sounds fantastic.

Anyhow, here’s my situation.

Firstly, I should explain I run two separate pickups from my double bass and eq separately then into a little joiner (mixer) and with that line out, I go into one input into my amp with complete control over both sends via the two EQ’s.

This system has worked for me for the past 20 years and on other bass set ups that I’ve done for friends too.

The problem is when I do this with my RAH500 I lose almost all my signal completely. I’ve tried through various mixers and even through a PA desk, but for some bizarre reason it just loses all signal if both signals are plugged in.

Separately they both work perfectly, and I can get around it by running one send into the effect loop at back of the amp instead of into the front input, but I’d rather it worked the way I am used to.

I have taken my amp and all my equipment to our local tech gurus and they did a multitude of tests but still were bamboozled at why it is not doing what I’m trying to achieve.

They are seeking advice from other people they know who are in the tech repair business but thus far we have not come up with a reason for this.

I just want to know if the problem is due to a design of the AH500 or if it is faulty. Either way I want to fix it, but I’m getting nowhere fast.

I also have tried running the two signals into both inputs on the amp (active and passive at same time) however on the AH500 it drops to almost inaudible levels like they are both cancelling each other out. there is still a signal, but it's like about 1/4 of the level it should be.

I will point out that all of the things i'm trying to achieve actually work perfectly on my old AH130, and I've run this amp for around 20 years without any problems.

I'm just starting to get really frustrated because although I can achieve the same result by sending one pickup into the effects return, it's not the way I want to run it.

I'm quite sure it's a fault, but so far my tech guys couldnt figure it out - Frustrating:confused:

Called the tech guys today to see if they've had any revelations, and they are seeking advice from a few other tech gurus that they know in the industry - i'm just hoping someone will have some suggestions.

Sorry, I told you it was kind of long winded

That's worth a thread in the main forum. You take a single mix into the active input of the amp and lose signal?

Weird alright, like the mixer doesn't work properly.

Running both active and passive inputs could well cancel each other out, no surprise there.

Yes it would seem like the mixer doesnt work, but I've tried it with various mixers and had all my equip tested at the tech place. It all tested in excellent working order, so I've eliminated everything down to the amp itself.

Active and passive cancell each other out - that makes sense too, but these seem to cancel out almost completely which is a bit strange - especially since my old AH130 doesnt do that. I can run both inputs in the AH130 at same time with still plenty of volume.

Anyhow, I'll keep trying my tech guys here and hopefully they may suggest something. If I could only get my hands on another AH500 (same model) to test and compare - then at least we might be able to figure what's happening.

Anyhow, I'll keep you posted. Cheers

I'd almost bet there is a logic gate that shuts off the input not used. If both are used then it confuses the logic circuit and it shuts off both sides.
I offer this because most of the SM, SMX, -7 & -12 series amps have one input jack and a manual switch that controls the active/passive section of the preamp.
