Tec Puma Bass amps

guys,

tecamp sells the matching big-cabs, for example a 2x15, a 4x10, 6x10 or 4x12 and even a 6x12 that can handle 1000watts (and way more!) at 8ohm.

but the idea behind the puma 1000 is that if you have a lightweight amp you probably will not want to carry such a big cabinet. you will use two smaller lightweight cabs each at 4 ohm (or more) or on the smaller locations (or when less volume is demanded) maybe only one 4ohm cab on the one channel and the pleasure-board one the other channel. that way you can keep the volume low, not disturbing anyone on the stage but still have an earth-ratling-feeling through your body. i saw quite a lot of professionals here in germany using the pleasure board.

one very cool thing with the puma 1000 is the fact that the one channel provides a sub-boost-function and that each channel has a seperate volume-knob on the back. the sub-boost cuts of everything above 200hz and therefore boosts the low end. so i can use my 1x15 as a sub and the 2x12 on the regular channel. that way you get a lot more lowend. you can hear and feel the difference.

another feature the puma 1000 provides is the very good sounding compressor which works almost without any loss of volume. it sustains the notes and is perfect for slapping, pick-playing or hiphop- and disco-stuff.

the last thing to mention is the low- and high boost-knobs on the frontend. with these controls you can shape the tone very easily in a certain direction before fine-tuning with the eq or the shape-filter.

all in all a very cool amp. if there is one thing i miss it would be an overdrive-function. i play a lot of rock-music where i sometimes need a tubey- ord slightly overdriven sound. but as i mentioned before: i put the aguilar tone hammer in front of the puma and have everything i can dream of then.

btw: i use my puma with a tech-soundsystems nd610xt cab. i weighs 33kg and has 2100watts on 6ohm. thomas eich assured me that 6ohm is not a problem at all for the puma 1000 in bridged mode. i can get plenty loud.

Again as I stated before it sounds like its a great amp. I am glad its working great for you. As what you are saying it makes sense for those using multiple cabinets or using big 8 ohm cabinets. I just think that someone with a single 410 or 212 at 4 ohms will get 500 watts. Which I am not saying it isn't enough for most. But it would be nice to have a 4 ohm at 750, where there is no lack of headroom - on some occasions. I am also saying 500 may have enough headroom. To me 500 or 550 is just in there for most bass applications. It also seems to be the norm for most or should I say the more popular bass amps. I just wish The Tech Amp has the possiblities to go 750 at 4 ohms. But I am not taking away its pluses at all.

bassist30,

you are cerainly right. it is limiting for those with big 4ohm cabs.

best would be if in bridged mode you could switch between 2, 4 or 8 ohm. but i guess this is technically impossible. otherwise with only one big powersection you would loose the cool options i mentioned.

Cool info in your longer post above. The channel volume controls on the back is a very cool idea, in case you are using cabs with different SPL, and that low pass filter on one channel is also slick.

Nice stuff! I continue to be impressed with the very pure, fat, tone coming out of my 500. It really does sound like one of those very high end studio mic preamps, and a dealer who carries both has compared the sound favorably to the Warwick Hellborg pre and amp, which is designed around that Neve channel strip (if I have that right). I was actually a bit concerned when I first got the head, since often that very pure, clean, warm, even type tone tends to get eaten up in a busy mix. However, the low mid control is the total bomb on this thing, and allows for as much punch without sounding 'peaky' as anyone could want IMO and IME.

You have given very good info on this amp. You know the amp very well which is good and maybe you can start a thread on this amp as it may become a big seller.

I would definitely prefer a single power section with support for a wider load level range, and I would definitely not assume that's technically impossible. It just wasn't a design criteria for them, is all.

True, but I wonder how many people, who are surely concerned with size an portability, since that's a primary feature of this amp, would be looking to run such a large rig?

At least IMHO, if I'm going to pay a premium for something that is particularly lightweight and portable for its power level, I'm going to do the same for my cab(s). It just seems like a huge disconnect for me to get something very portable and lightweight, paying extra for that characteristic, and then nullify that with a big and/or heavy cab config.

Yeah, KJung and I have been PM'ing about this, and based on what he says, it's a PARTICULARLY nice compressor. IMHO that's a really great feature!

Vic:

thomas eich, the founder of tech soundsystems, now known as tecamp, was the first to build cabinets with neodynamic speakers worldwide. he is a very innovative person and he always thinks on how he could makes things easier for us. with the new puma 1000 (also with the big performer or the black-cat) you can build your rig as you want, either one big cab 8ohms both powersections bridged mode or two cabinets (big or small) each max. 4 ohms. the output of the amplifier stays the same. or you can take one cabinet and one pleasure board. as i said it would be best if you could use one big cab at 4ohm though. maybe there will be an upgrade one day (like with the glockenklang heartrock 4 to 2,6666 ohms)?

one last thing: i bought this amp for 1.190,- Euro which is a bit more than 1.500,- USD at the moment. i don´t know about the prices in the usa, probably more expensive. but here in europe it will probably not be possible to find such a good sounding high-quality amp with all these features at that price. it definitly plays in the same league as the heart rock but at a much more affordable price.

Yeah, I've been to their site, and of course several of their cabs would meet my criteria. The ones I just "don't get" however, are the bigger and/or heavier ones. Just seems to be counter to the whole point. :)

That's unfortunate. There's LOTS of great options here in the USA for much less money, but this is also not the first time I've heard stuff like this. I know we have it "easy" here compared to most places. I do count my blessings for that, at least.

Subscribed. . .

Ok! Who's going to buy one of these to try out and sell to me slightly used?

I like the Looks of that Puma 1000.

Pardon my not reading the whole thread yet.

Are these available yet?

How much for the 1000

That would be one cool amp to pair up with say a Lightweight 1x15 Cab.

The Puma1000 is available. You might want to peruse the thread. There are some good posts about it. It's a 'stereo' head that bridges to full power at 8ohms, but is really designed to run two 4ohm cabs, 500 a side. I'm not sure there is a 115 around that can handle that power. The 500 would be a better choice with a small single speaker cab.

Here is the website with the US available products and pricing.

The 500 with the 4ohm 212S seems like it will be killer.

Well my thinking is more power is allways good. I'm running a 2600 watt Power Amp into my 800 watt Cab with no issues. Of coarse I dont dime the Amp. There is something to be said for Headroom.

An old Boogie (though not zactly lightweight) 1x15 would probably hold up good to that Head. Those ol 400 WATT EV's are pretty tuff.

I will check the rest of the thread out.

I agree there. And, if your single 115 cab is 8ohms, the Puma500 might not have quite the headroom you would need. At 4ohms, it sounds glorious!

Remember, the Puma line is their new micro lightweight line. They have a full line of more traditional full size heads that are meant to match up with their larger cabs.

Hey Ken,

You catch my interest here
;)

Exactly the cab I was considering. You almost can't find anything on that cab on the web (even in Europe) so I'll be waiting your impressions patiently but eagerly.
:)

I think they are just starting to ship. I was told by the distributor that they should be getting a shipment in the US by the end of the month. I'll post up, as always:D
