Tec Puma Bass amps

One great thing about TB is there is no lack of people who know their stuff willing to take a chance on unknown expensive gear. I'm certainly not one of them, but I'm glad a few of you are ;)

OK did some more looking at the site. Didnt see the cabs on there before.

OK so a matching M212 at 8 ohms and 600 watts Power Handling. 1,00 watts of the Head gives it plenty of Headroom but this whole rig would be the Grab and go for small Gigs and my other rig would be for sho nuff Gigs and if I really felt frogy could fire em both a larger stuff.

Very cool. Got my wheels turning. :hyper:

We've had Techamp for just over 2 weeks now at Bass People.
The 600, puma, 210s and 212s and the vibrating floorboard

I really like the Puma, to my ears it sounds very similar to the Hellborg amplification but voiced a bit better in the lower mids,
I really love the 'taste' knob, set all the way to the right you can get a pretty good motown sound out it, and I was using a super bright jazz bass.
didn't really like the taste knob set to the left though.
I found comparing it to my Epi 902 that my 902 was warmer than the puma. however the puma packed more punch.

The speakers are very lightweight, I haven't had a great deal of checking them out but the 4 directional handles are very handy.

Similar to the Hellborg, really?? wow. must check one out. i love the hellborg sound.

I continue to be VERY impressed with this amp. Now that I've had it on a number of gigs in a variety of settings, it is rapidly moving to the top of my list.

I don't really dig it with the AE410 (the F1 RULES with that cab). However, the absolutely WONDERFUL low mid control (250hz and wide Q) just makes my 410UL sing. That cab needs a bit of help in the mids (for my tone goals anyway), and the Puma voicing and EQ center points and shelving points seems to be made with that cab in mind. It's the first head I've owned that can get a bit of burp and punch out of that cab without sounding harsh or grating.

As I've posted before, the general tonality of the Puma500 is in the general area of the Glock HR/Soul and Epi heads.... kind of creamy and smooth. However, the Puma also PUNCHES and has plenty of upper treble and upper mid brightness if you want it.

Again, it won't put out quite the overall volume of the F1 (no other micro does that I've experienced... although the new GK micro seems to be quite forceful given the early reviews), but it has that 'super high end through a mixing console' sort of vibe, and into 4ohms, is plenty loud for all but the loudest, largest gigs.

I am now HIGHLY recommending this head to anyone who owns an EpiUL cab (especially the slightly more mid polite and scooped sounding II's), and likes it pure, clean, warm, but also the ability to punch and burp a bit.

I would think the Puma1000 bridged into an 8ohm Epi410UL might be among the best rigs out there for the tone goals described above.

Edit: I should have the 41 pound 4ohm 212S cab within a week or so, and will post up on that also.

Hmmmm... sounds like maybe I should try the Puma 1000 with my two S1 UL-310's, eh? :bassist:

So far, in my brief experience with the Puma 1000, it strikes me as being smooth overall, with a hint of 'roundness' to the lows, and a glassy, but not harsh, high end. I have not spent much time tweaking the tone controls, but it certainly is quite versatile in the range of tones you can dial up.

Tom.

+1... just set the amp flat and boost the low mid control to around 1 o'clock. It's really stunning with the EpiUL's to my ear. And, your description of 'glassy but not harsh' up top is a very good one. While I've owned other heads that do this 'glassy but not harsh' sort of treble response (Glock, Epi502), this is the first amp I've personally gigged that seems to be able to project that very hi fi top end out into the audience. Maybe the closest thing to the top end of this amp I've experienced is my old iAmp350.

It's a nice combination of the 'best of all worlds' to my ear if you want that unique combination of hi fi clean, but still punchy and with some 'warmth and character'. Pretty impressive.

Just to clarify, the Puma 1000 is identical to the 500 in it's pre and power amp design (and theoretically its tone) - the differences being in the features (compressor, etc...), power, and impedence?

Thanks!

It's basically two Puma500's in the same box, with a bunch more features (compressor, deep and brite switch, etc.).

The downside on the 1000 is that it takes two 4ohm cabs or one large 8ohm cab to reach it's maximum output (just like the old WT800). Since most have two small 8ohm cabs and/or one large 4ohm cab (since that's the optimum set-up for the more typical monoblock amp like the 500, the LMII, the Shuttle 6.0, etc., etc.), the 1000 configuration is not optimal for most.

For example, the BergAE410 only comes in 4ohms, and most small single speaker cabs only come in 8ohms. However, if you don't mind carrying two moderate sized 4ohm cabs around (like two 4ohm 210's), the 1000 is probably killer.

The pre and amp design are identical as the 350 and 500 as far as I know.

Great, thanks. An 8 ohm "big cab" for sale has me thinking seriously about this one. Based on your description of the tone, all the extra bells and whistles would probably be moot - boost the low mid, everything else flat, get ready to do some physical damage to anyone closer than 30 yards away! :bassist:

Yeah, this head bridged into an 8ohm 410UL would be about as good as you can get if you like it pure and clean and need huge volume. The 500 drives the 410UL (4ohm) quite nicely (as loud as I would ever need), but I can tell that cab can take a lot more than the Puma500 is giving it.

And, on a side note, my 212S should clear customs on Tuesday according to Rawn, so I should have it next Friday. If that puts out 75% of the wump of the 410UL in half the size and 30% less weight, I'm going to be a very happy camper! The 16" by 17" footprint is very appealing to me.

Keep some bruthas posted! :D

How does the Puma sound compare to Mesa's M6 Carbine?

I'll be able to say better once I get my Fathom back, but I'd say that there are some similarities (the slightly round low end from each being one), but the Puma is going to be a little richer through the low to middle mids, and the M6 is going to be more aggressively articulate and snappy in the upper mids and treble region.

But again, this is not based upon a direct A/B comparison.

I again agree with Tom... nice fat low end that reminds me a bit of the M6, but the top end is totally different. The upper mids and treble is very 'in your face' with the M6, whereas the Puma has that hi fi, creamy, sophisticated treble response and very polite upper mids like the Glock or Epi heads.

The M6 is more like aaaarghhhhh, and the Puma is more like aaaahhhhhhh :)

Edit: The M6 is loud as heck, and while I haven't done the A/B, is probably closer to the Puma1000 output than the 500.

This is why I love talkbass!
