TecAmp amplification club.....is there such a thing yet

+1 Nostatic: I just played my first gig with the Puma900, and already understand how sensitive it is to touch. One SUPER impressive observation was how even it is across the frequency spectrum, which may be why a compressor might not feel as necessary to you.

The EQ controls are just fantastic; they're voiced for zones I'd want to tweak, and subtle adjustments yield clearly audible results. It feels like playing another instrument rather than plugging into an amp. It was a joy to go over and dial in the sound for the next song. Note definition and "weight" is beyond anything else I've ever used. This is the first time that I've played through an amp that "demanded respect"; you will be rewarded mightily for playing well and be notified when the clams show up. Learning how to dial in the Puma is going to take some getting used to...

After 3 loud hour+ sets in a small/medium room packed to the gills with 100-150 people, the amp was certainly very warm but not alarmingly. After this, I'm really not concerned about the lack of a fan. Running the Puma900 into a 4ohm/600watt Accugroove Whappo Jr with no PA support, the master maxed out around 1 o'clock.

Moral of the story: I'm sold.

Ok guys, need some quick advice as I'm on the fence of buying a Tecamp L810 for 800 euro, used and in perfect condition. I have an Ampeg PF500 as a head, and the cab is rated at 2400 watts.... will I get the most out of it with my head? I mean, I won't even be using a fifth of its potential.

well, it will sound horrible. perhaps you need a Bad Bull 2100.

Don't get caught up in the numbers IMO. Unless you're needing a bone crushing amount of volume, that combo should sound great (if you needed that much stage volume you wouldn't be using that head in the first place). I would say go for it, you can always get a more powerful head down the road if you need one, but the cab shouldn't necessitate a higher power head than what you've got to sound excellent.

Alright, here's one for the peanut gallery:

On Saturday night's gig I had my powersoft Puma 500 and a 4 ohm load. Midway into the first dance set at medium volume..."SNAP!"...2 seconds of silence...(band and I played on as if nothing happened)...then full recovery and all was well the rest if the night.

What happened?

Bummer to hear that Ryan. Considering how short the drop out was, it doesn't really sound like protection circuitry. Was your amp the only thing plugged into that particular outlet, and did you notice the lights turn off? Did the outage happen to anyone else in your band? Were you plugged into any effects or cables that may have been a weak link?

Ha! You got one of these heads, huh? You have to come by so I can compare yours to mine. Mine's an older version. Different sound. Curious about yours. Miss you man! Come by to hang soon!

Unfortunately I was the only one plugged into that outlet, and sans power conditioning, so no comparisons can be made. No dimming or drops of any sort elsewhere.

...and yes I have one of "those heads." Love it. Lets def compare sometime.

Im looking for a little input ...Im running two different rigs right now...Ampeg SVT CL with Heritage 810=mostly outdoor gigs and large venues... and a Mesa M6 2x12 Combo=mostly small gigs /jazz gigs and rehearsals.
Both are great rigs in their own right...but Im trying to minimize size / weight etc..while maintaining great tone...whos kidding whom....Killer Tone!! (So me thinks.LOL)
What Im thinking is ....Sell off the Mesa ....buy a Puma 500 or 900 ...buy a Tec Amp or Fbass 2x10..for small gigs ....then Sell off the Ampeg head and use either the 500 or 900 with the Ampeg 810.

So this is what it would break down as:
Puma 500 or 900 w/210 cab
Puma 500 or 900 w/810 cab
Both cabs are 4 ohms

But I only want to buy one head...and take head back and forth with me between gigs and reherals.

Do you forsee any issues, tone issues/ power handling issues ...etc?... any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Randyt

I have yet to need my 900 on a gig - I have used the 500 for everything, including outdoor shows. I can't speak to the big cab option but on the small side I decided to move from 10s to 12s when I switched to Tecamp. That said, I know Glenn is a big fan of the M210 if you want to go that direction. I've been very happy with running either a single or pair of XS112s for small/mid gigs, and the M212 is a *great* cab that sounds huge and only weighs 44 lbs. I found the S212 to be kinda in-between and a bit thick in the low mids, but I may go back and revisit that cab now that my ears have recalibrated a bit.

Thank you Nostatic....on another note...maybe you can describe what you find between the differences between the S / M / L models may it be the 10's or 12's...I have read over the specs and info sheets but ...really dosent give up alot of info.

thanks

Never played the L cabs, but the S and M cabs (small and large) have the same exact components, tweeters and crossovers. The M cabs are a bit larger, resulting in a bit more open low end. The XS cabs are really small, low end attenuated, and have a less fully featured crossover network. Again, not sure of the L specd.

IMO, the M cabs are the sweet spot in the line-up, although the S212 is pretty killer. These are so small and so lightweight that I wouldn't even bother with a 210. The S212 is paperlightweight, and not much bigger than some 210's. Nice box, if a bit pricey in the US.

+1 The XS112 doesn't have huge low end (but it is 22 lbs and small footprint), but a pair of them will work in most any band mix as they have great punch - it will get seriously loud. The M212 has a much bigger low end. The S212 is a nice middle ground - has a bit more low end than the XS112 pair (it is 2" deeper, same width) and a smaller footprint than the M212. But 40lbs with S212 and 44lbs for the M212 - pick your poison.

Another thing (and maybe Nostatic can confirm, since it has been a while since I've been in the TecAmp world).

Nostatic mentioned that the s212 was a bit more polite and low mid thick, and that is definitely true of the revoiced model (maybe 4 years ago). You can tell the newe model from the older on since it has large rear ports versus the small triangular ports of the original s212. This, for whatever reason, softened the upper mid response, making the cab sound deeper and smoother.

The M212, as for as I know, still has the original tuning, and is a bit more 'upper mid forward', similar to the original s212. I like the original voicing quite a bit more.

I never heard the original S212, but I've been trying to find one as I used to run Berg AE210s and like certain aspects of those cabs. The newer S212 is my reference point, and it is in fact rear-ported and I find has a fair amount of low mids. The M212 that I have is front ported, and there are tweeter/horn settings that will cop the upper mid bite of the Berg cabs. I find that I actually prefer a bit softer setting on the M212 though, as that upper mid gank can get to be a bit much. The M212 is a huge sounding cabinet but it still has punch. I played an outdoor gig with a 9 piece lineup and almost no FOH (just some DI bass in the monitors). The Puma 500 and that cab filled the venue (outdoor country club concert) no problem.

Thanks Nostatic / Kjung for the help

Its becoming more clear in which cab to buy, but still not sure whether I need to step up to 900 to be more compatible with Ampeg810?...or is the 810 becoming obsolete?...hmmm?
Thanks again

The 900 is the same size as the 500 and not that much more expensive. If you were strictly going to use a 212, I wouldn't bother, but there really isn't a downside to the 900 IMO, and if you are in a situation of pushing a very large cab or a low efficiency 8ohm cab, then the extra wattage would be a nice thing to have.

Totally. The only difference I could tell between my 500 and my 900 was turning the volume knob to 8:30 with a 4ohm load rather than 9pm. But it's great to know the power and headroom are there when you need it. ;)
