TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

That's why I moved to the Puma500/s212 from my previous 410 rigs (even though I still own those cabs). I get 80% of the wump, in a much smaller package. And, with that little 212 and the Puma in a bag on top strapped to my Kart-a-bag 600, I can walk blocks and block, up and down stairs, curbs, etc. without even thinking about it.

That combo looks awesome (and the TecAmp covers are the most padded I've experienced), but I need my tweeter, so that combo wasn't an option for me. It looks pretty awesome though! I"m not a big fan of those little tilt back wheel things, but in some situations, they can work great.

Also, as we discussed in detail earlier in the thread, the combo is 8ohms internally to allow for adding an extension cab. Since I never use two cabs on a gig, the ability to put the full 500 watts of the Puma500 into the s212 was a positive for me (again, not so much for volume but clean headroom). Not a huge issue there, but for my playing style (occasionally slapping and liking a bright tone), the extra wattage and tweeter in the stand-alone version fit my needs a bit better.

+1 The XLR DI is on the front of the amp, and there is an additional line out. The XLR DI (a very nice one by the way) is switchable from pre to post on the front panel also. The line out is post everything except the mute button (including master volume) and is designed to power an external power amp if you want to use the Puma as a preamp to drive a more powerful power amp. All in all, it's a VERY well thought out design IMO and IME!

As a summary, the only difference between the combo212 and the Puma500/s212 is that the combo has a mid driver (along with the tilt back castor design) and the standalone has a more traditional tweeter with adjustable crossover and attenuator.

So is the combo a 3-way or does the mid run all the way up?

Two way with no attenuater... I believe they have it spec'd to 18k on the site, which is just about the same as the tweeter models. I assume it's primarily a tonal difference (i.e., a more natural paper cone type top end versus the more aggressive 'horn tweeter' sort of thing).

Just picked up and unpacked my combo :hyper:

First impressions are very good... It's shockingly light and really well built all the way around :cool: And the size is perfect!! Especially for being under 50 pounds!

I don't have my bass with me, because I'm working out of town at the moment :( But i'll be pluggin' her in on Wednesday when I get home.

In reality the midrange speaker is unlikely to do much past about 8kHz, however for many bass players that's plenty.

Just ordered a new endorser rig, Puma 500 and M212. Cant wait.
Right now im using the Puma 350 112 Combo with the XS115, its great but i really need a external head for the rental rigs.
Gotta love em Tecamps.

I can't quite picture that. IMO, the DB750 seems a bit picky on cabinet matching to my ear. I guess maybe on of the larger 212's like the M or L might be OK in 8ohm version. However, the more refined, modern, articulate voicing of the Tecamp cabs does not really bring to mind the low end burl and warmth of the DB750.

I've never heard that combination though, so just guessing.

I can imagine that beeing quite an interesting combination.
I have only tried the AG500 with the M212 cab, and while that still is very different from the DB750, it still has that "Aggie-sound" going.
But keep in mind that the Tecamp cabs are very clean and honest, they may not be "your sound" if you are in to the Aggie stuff now.
Ah ken said, i think a larger cab would suite the DB750 better, maybe the 215, wich is a crazy cab. Quik and transparent but with a warmer touch than most Tecamp cabs.
I played that cab with the new black jag, and that is a crazy combination.

On a side note, I'm really looking forward to getting the new s212(II), with the lower tuning and larger rear ports. It's a couple of weeks late at this point, but I've been told it has been shipped from Germany. It will be interesting to A/B it with the original s212, which is very impressive!

Aha cool! Yes i heard Thomas talking about that. Are you keeping your "old" S212?
Im guessing it will sound a little more like the M212 then, wich has a little darker more low mid focused caracter.
Both great cabs!

Yes. I like the Puma500/s212 rig so much, that I will have one in each of the two locations in which I perform (I do quite a bit of fly ins to St. Louis from Detroit, so it's nice to have a rig and bass there so I don't have to schlep on a plane... long story!). I was going to purchase an M212 to just get a little more booty down low, but when I heard that they were extending the low end of the s212, I switched my order to that updated version.

From what I understand, all the cabs will eventually go to the new porting, but that is based on second hand information, so not sure if and/or when that will happen.

Yes i know Thomas been working a lot with trying out different portings lately, it will be interesting to try out the new stuff, and maybe do some A/B-testing.
That sounds great, not needing to haul the cab from one place to another (even though you almost can carry the S212 on your head :D )0
The M212 thats on its way (should be here this afternoon) is a 4 ohm version. 500 watts into that cab (wich is veeery efficient) is going to be crazy. Ive used the 8 ohm version a couple of times so we will se if i notice any sound differences.

It should crank pretty well. I would think you would hear just a touch more volume, but a much nicer, more open low end with the additional power.
