TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

I guess you meant first overtone aka second harmonic. However I seriously doubt it's strong there, more likely that the third harmonic @ 93Hz is the loud one. Getting a strong second harmonic on low B is where most cabs fall down so badly.

Alex

I always mix those exact terms up. +1... it's that very useful, even extension of the E string down through the open B that I like so much. No boom, no spread, just a very defined, but 'low' note that you can actually hear the note pitch and a bit of grind and character even in a busy mix. I love it:bassist:

That makes sense. I like to hear the note pitch and growl and character, though rarely do I want grind, plus I want the extra fatness of the second harmonic staying at full output all the way down to low B (hence my cab designs!)

+1 I can see that also! I sure do wish I could check out one of your cabs. If you ever do send one to Tom for a Bass Gear Review, I will make sure to drive down there (we are less than 2 hours away) and try it out.

Just an update.... this rig continues to absolutely kill. I actually feel more positive about it as time goes on, which is a good sign:bassist: I also continue to LOVE the Puma500 with the Epi410UL!!!! Smooth but punchy as heck, and just huge down low also!

I understand my s212 Version II will ship later this week, so I'll post an update with the new cab (which is basically an updated tuning/porting to the original model I'm currently using).

Good to hear! Looking forward to hearing about the newer cab!

Also looking forward to hearing about Speyer's experience with his combo. You got that yet, buddy? :eyebrow:

We are all waiting in excitement for the new cab KJung :) I am just about to order a new bass rig and have been eyeing TecAmp for quite some time. I am wondering if the new 212 will cut it as a standalone for a 6 string.

Even the original s212 is cutting it for me in a big way with a 5 string. Of course, I'm playing moderate volume funk/pop, but it's giving me about 75% of 'typical 410' volume and low end, which is pretty amazing from a cab that is half the size of a typical 410!

Mine won't ship for another week or so either.

Also, because I'm between Kamloops/Vancouver... I had Glenn ship it to my mailbox in Blaine so I'll have to 'import' it to Canada myself. Unfortunately, this means that whenever I do get down to blaine is entirely dependent on my work schedule :hmm:

I may have to let it sit there for a week or two after it arrives!! :crying: But I'll know better later next week ...

Pat.

FYI... new TecAmp Richard Bona model.

Two channel, bridgable to 4ohms (800 watts), and an interesting 'true stereo' design, which allows you to run two different cabs using different pre's for each if you so choose.

Anyway, looks kind of cool, although the feature set doesn't particularly interest me.

Looks interesting, not something anyone would really need though, just a GAS source

+1 Lot's of bells and whistles that most wouldn't use. I continue to feel the Puma500 is the 'sweet spot' of the Puma line-up.... plenty of power with a couple small 8ohm cabs or a large 4ohm cab, and simple but VERY powerful EQ that is rarely needed due to the very even and pure voicing of the head.

The Bonafide would be cool for doublers who need a LOT of power though.

Kjung, i am stuck about ordering a single 8ohm 212 or a 4ohm. I really would like to use the puma 500 and the 212 alone, but have the option of adding a cab if needed. any thoughts?

That's always a difficult decision, especially with an amp that is not designed to run at 2 ohms, but that is also not mega powerful at 8ohms.

IMO, your situation is what the Puma1000 is designed for. If you get two 4ohm s212's, you basically have a Puma500 (with some additional bells and whistles) when running one cab, and the full 1000 watts when running two. Of course, it will cost you more cash.

I'm really not that impressed with ANY of the small micro's running at 8ohms through a large cab like a 212. It's not so much about pure volume as a bit of compression and attenuation in the low end when really pushed (which IMO is a combination of a lack of headroom, and running into the power amp safety compression). The Puma500 sounds better than most at 8ohms, but it really opens up at 4 when pushed.

IMO!

I might just have to order a 4ohm and an Epifani 410UL to swap it with for the big gigs. haha ;)

That is EXACTLY what I do at this point. The 4ohm s212 gets the majority of duty at this point. However, if I know I'm playing in a HUGE room or outside, the 410UL (4ohm) comes out for that added low end and overall presence/volume (it's just the physics of a bigger box with more drivers). I like the tone of the s212 better at this point (it kind of sits between my 410UL and AE410 tonewise... more punchy than the 410UL, but less 'aggressive' than the AE410), but the Puma500 just LOVES that 410UL voicing also!

The cool thing, as discussed earlier in this thread, is that the s212 has gone through a slight redesign (different porting) that results, supposedly, in the ability to punch a little more deep low end out of that cab at volume. I have one on the way. If it lives up to that 'same tone but a little wider low end', it might be the only cab I need... period! We shall see!

I think im set on a single 4ohm 212 :) i very rarely play large ballrooms and such. Thanks for the input. Cheers!

Another thing to think about is getting the M212 (the slightly larger box) versus the s212 (the price is about the same). I think the M212 will be going through the porting redesign also (that's second hand info). It's still very lightweight, and still quite small for a 212, but I assume has a bit more ooomph given the larger internal cab volume (it's a few inches wider, which really multiplies the internal volume quite a bit). It has the same drivers, tweeter, etc. as the s212, and has the same 'vertical orientation' with just a bit larger footprint.

I have thought about it, but thought i would wait until your review of the new 212

I'll put it through its paces as soon as it arrives. I have a feeling that it will be a while yet (probably a couple more weeks), since the EU NAMM (Musikmesse, or whatever that is called) is going on this week. That usually craters the manufacturers for a couple weeks prior and a week after:hmm:

Just came back from MusikMesse Ken and I stopped at TecAmp stand, quite nice guys and the gear seemed very interesting. They had the new Bona amp as well the new S212 from what I could tell, also a lot of other models but I couldn't test any of those!! it's been a real pity.

Anyway I hope the NAMM is way better than MusikMesse. MM is a great show but a lot of important makers weren't there (e.g. Lakland, ErnieBall, FBass, and some important others skipped the show) ... I saw though Alain Caron playing live through the its Markbass Alain Caron prototype. That was worth everything!
