I spoke with Glenn today about the 500/S212 and combo and differences between them.
For one thing, I didn't realize that the combo doesn't have the cool tweeter attenuator that the S212 cab has. Bummer...
And for clarity's sake, he told me that while the S212 has a 'real' tweeter "with a sweeter top end," the combo tweeter is the 4" version with a lower crossover point and less sweet top end in comparison, again with no tweeter attenuator.
Scott you just had to go and stir the pot... again!! :scowl:
Glenn didn't mention the removal of the tweeter control in the combo to me, I guess he forgot! hmmm...
Also, what would be a 'sweeter' top end? like more open, smooth or something? I find that a bit confusing because I would normally associate larger paper cone type tweeters with that type of description vs. their metallic 'bullet' counterparts.
Just some things to consider. Also, he says the actual volume between the 8 ohm combo and the 4 ohm is about a 1 to 1 1/2 db difference at most and you can only really tell when you a/b the two side by side. But the 4 ohm version, while sounding darker, will not be as even as intended by design since the two 112 speakers will be overpowering the little 4" guy.
I'm guessing between the lower crossover point and larger tweeter, it's going to sound more like an 'upper extension' of the 12" drivers vs. a traditional bullet tweet. If that is the case, I could see that being reason enough to eliminate the need for tweeter control. (although this one is pretty cool
The other point thrown in here is about it being 4ohms instead of 8ohms, thus making the combo's tweeter 'weaker' given it's intended 8ohm impedance. I think this difference would be small like you said (1 to 1-1/2db correct?) and would only be noticeable in an A/B situation. Also, I'm kind of hoping that since I always attenuate the tweeter to around 7-10 o'clock to fit my tone regardless, maybe this cab will land 'defaulted' somewhere in that range.
I'm excited to hear it, and I think this combo is going to be great into 4ohms. I've come to love cabs with a lower crossover point and a bigger tweeter (like my old berg ht115)... seems to add a little oomph the the really high notes on my 6'er. (Kind of too bad they didn't throw in the tweet control - it wouldn't hurt) It's also begining to sound like the combo has been designed to be more on the 'vintage' side of the spectrum compared to the standalone cabs... which is a good thing IHMO
