TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

+1 to that! :bassist:

Ken... i think Dean is drawn to the form factor of the combo. ;) That's kinda what did it for me too!

But if you're committed to needing a 4 ohm cab... The s212/Puma IS the way to go for sure.

Pat.

Ken, thanks for pointing out those important factors, I should have read it more carefully.

I probably missed this too .. but... how does the S212 sound with the LMII or F1 ? Ken... be easy on me ;)

Also, didn't somebody mention a special order can be place for a 4ohm combo... hey.. I'm on a roll

:) They won't do (or at least HIGHLY recommend against) a 4ohm combo for two reasons. One, since there will still be an external speaker jack on the combo, it would be an article of faith that no one would ever plug another cab into the combo, bringing the total impedance to below 4ohms. I think what they would do is do it for you and not provide a warranty (which is the companies way of saying... don't do it).

Even more important, since the mid driver is 'fixed' with no attenuator, doing a 4ohm driver would 'darken' the tone of the cab, resulting in the woofers overwhelming the mid driver. Yes, that could be adjusted for, but given the other issue above, it's my understanding that the combo's 'are what they are'.

Again, for those who want a single 4ohm cab solution, the stand-alone cabs are awesome.

I did not care for either the LMII or the F1 with my original s212. The cabs are very tight and a bit upper mid present (at least the original s212... the redesigned s212 that should arrive within the hour:bassist: is supposed to have a bit more low end extension, and a bit softer upper mid response. The fat, creamy tone of the Puma matched with the tight, somewhat aggressive tone (to my ear) of the s212 really balances out to a very flat, transparent platform. The MB heads, with are tighter down low and, especially the F1, brighter and more aggressive in the upper mids, is a bit 'too much of a good thing' for me personally.

I'll do a good trial of the F1 with the new s212 though, and see if the voicing is different enough to change my opinion.

Ken, thanks a bunch. I appreciate you taking the extra time.
I will wait for your take on the newer S212 and LMII. I really don't need another amp, but have been interested a long time in a vertical 4ohm 212. Now there are several out in the market place and I never stop browsing :D

I am sorta drawn to a combo thing, but it's not going to work as you pointed out.

I may have an opportunity to try a Genz Neo 212t soon as a local friend has one he might be selling. Will I see how I like it just for the heck of it.

I'm very interrested in that combination too. Maybe the M212 or the L410 has more lowend, and is more usable with the F1?

The eagle has landed. It obviously doesn't look any different than my other s212/Puma500 rig, but what the heck. Here's a 'ready to schlep' and a 'ready to funk' view:

My original s212 is in another location, so I can't do a direct A/B right now. However, I can tell that the new rear ported model sounds exactly as Glenn from Austin Bass Traders said it would: slightly less upper mid present, and the ability to dial in much more deep low end without any compression. Even though the original s212 has plenty of low end, if I dialed in a stupid amount (which I did just for testing), I could get that little front port to chuff a bit (it's not an issue on a gig using more 'reasonable' low end boost). On the new one, I can dial STUPID low end in, and it stays smooth as silk.

So, all in all, a VERY nice tweak. I also got the rack bag for my second Puma500 head. Now that the bag has a nice cable pocket, it's by far the coolest micro bag out there. It's literally a small rack bag (the head screws into the bag just like if you were attaching the rack ears), and it is the highest quality possible. GREAT design.

Not much else to say, especially since the original s212 is no longer in production. I guess I'll just sum up saying the original s212 was one of the best cabs I've played, and the new one is better (smoother and more even).:bassist:

Nice Ken. Hope the LMII sounds good with the new s212 as it would be a nice 'different' option for me, although I'm using my LMII/AE410 on almost every gig these days. Love it with the Sad UV w/sc and solid ash... as you are well aware. ;)

I tell you what, the AE410 with the F1 and the Sadowsky ash/maple with single coils is about as good as it gets, and I actually prefer that rig to the TecAmp for the Sadowsky basses. It just does that aggressive, snarly grind wonderfully. It's not particularly 'pretty' sounding, but in the mix, I can hear the windings on the B string through the mix all the way!

With the Copollo's though, the TecAmp just sings!!!!

Oh, so they are changing the M212 to?
Thomas said they would not, but thats cool.
I am not a great fan of rear porting, so i will keep my current cab.
But for thoose wanting crazy low end (the corrent M212 has a lot of it) that will be a crazy cab.

What a cool looking setup, with all those matching tecamp bags and everything! Very cool.

BTW Ken, I ordered a custom made padded slip cover for my combo. It should be here on wednesday. :hyper: I ordered it from Invalid Link Removed, and I think it'll do the trick. ;)

Pat.

That sounds about right to me. :D

Good to hear the new cab is an improvement Ken... with the new (successful;)) rear porting... and no need to get the bigger m212, it sounds like this ones a winner!

Congrats!

Pat.

+1! I'd love to hear your combo also. There is so much nice top end coming from the woofers, that I think that mid driver to just top the upper treble off but keep it 'paper cone' sounding and natural must be very, very nice, and great for anyone other than those who really want the 'slap sizzle' or whatever.

I did any outside gig at a beautiful venue in Forest Park (the large Central Park of St. Louis) last night. I still have the original s212 there, and even outside, it held up very nicely. It doesn't have quite the oomph of my 410 cabs (no 212 does), but it's 80% there, and sounds much more even to me. I'm hoping the updated design of the s212 will get me to 85% of the low end of the big 410. That will be perfect!

It really sounded great, and very even across the stage.

Oh, so they are changing the M212 to?
Thomas said they would not, but thats cool.

I have it in an email from Glenn at Austin Bass Traders that the M212 will have the new porting "in the coming months." Of course, that's not to say he's not mistaken.

Man, this cab sounds good. If they rework the M212 with this new tuning/porting, that might be one of the greatest cabs ever.. period.

STOOOOP saying this... you're gonna talk me into something crazy!

Thanks guys! Guess I have to start saving for a Berg...

FYI: The AE410 isn't available in germany, have to get it from England. The Techamp stuff is a lot cheaper here in germany:
AE410 ca. 1350€ (w/shipping from GB), TecAmp L410 1000€... :crying:

I would guess that the L410 would be just killer with any head, especially if they continue the tuning/porting redesign through the entire line of cabs.

I wonder how the Puma 500 head would sound with my Phil Jones neo 8B cab?

I want to get something better/versatile than my AI Focus head. If I do a gig with an electric bass I have to use a VT bass pedal through the effect loop return. I've also used my REDDI through the loop (utilizing a XLR to 1/4" cable) as well and that sounds GREAT - but it's not very practical to take everywhere and you can't EQ it if needed.
