Tech 21 at NAMM

tech 21 likes to use the same chassis for everything. i have a feeling new vt's will have it.

you know, at first i thought it was silly to have cab emulation switchable, and i still see no point in doing it for guitar, but i'm thinking it makes sense for a bassist. if you like high freqs, svt's do sound good speaker di'd.

i've got no interest in it, though. 4-5k rolloff has served me well for 35 years, it'll serve me well a few more.

yeah i bet it wouldnt even have all that svt character in the tone if you switch off the cab emulation :hmm:

IMO, switching off the cabinet emulation might be more useful for guitarists, because the majority of bassists these days use clean amplification and cabinets with tweeters, while guitarists tend to use dirtier amps and speaker cabinets which roll off the highs naturally. Speaker emulation is much more beneficial when running through a full range system.

Yeah, you can watch the TAD documentary at veoh.com for free. Just type in "Tad busted circuts and ringing ears". It doesn't tell you how to get the bass sound(s) Kurt Danielson had, though :(. The only reason i know the details is because I'm a friend of his and i used to have a lot of curiosity about his sound haha.

Anyway, that's how he got those two tones. I tried to be as descriptive as i could, so let me know if it helped out any, and if you have questions, than feel free to ask. See ya man.

Thanks for the info and the veoh link :bassist: One question though, did he use the same setup live as in the studio ? I've been running my bass through my Pod XTL and have gotten similar tones but alas, it doesn't translate well when cranked through an amp. :hmm:

Also, I know Phil Campbell from Lamb Of God also uses the Mesa 400+ and a Sansamp BDDI/RBI and his tone kicks hella ass too. At the time I was buying my amp I had the choice between the LMII, a Traynor Bassmaster (?), GK 400RB II, SWR 400 Working Pro (I was going to get it but it had sold) and an Ampeg SVT3-Pro that were all in my price range. Effects aside, as a stand-alone amp, I found that the MarkBass had the richest tone of the batch. The only other amp I tried that I liked more was the Mesa M9 Carbine and it was literally twice as much. I never thought the downside would be that it didn't react well to a lot of distortion boxes.

I've noticed as well that with a lot of the players I mentioned in my previous post is that they all seem to use basses with P and/or J pickups whereas I have an Ibanez Iceman w/ 2 soapbar style pickups so that would make a bit of a difference as well.

Regardless of all that though, with the VT and Transparent OD in place, I've nailed down a pretty beastly tone nonetheless and although it wasn't the tone I had in my head, I would still take the LMII over the others.

Well, for his "Inhaler' sound", he used the exact same rig live, and sometimes he might have used more cabinets, but I'm pretty damn sure that he only used the 4x12 Sunn guitar cab. Like in this video, that's the rig he was using: .
As far as Infrared goes, as you can tell, it'd be a real pain in the ass to replicate the exact sound he had by A/B/Y-ing everything, running the Sansamp through the PA only, having to mic the B-15 (they were playing bigger gigs by then), and all of that stuff. So he just did whatever he could to get close to the sound, so he told me. He said he found that if he used the 2 Mesa's & the 8x10 + 1x15 cab hooked up to each head, and cranked the heads than he could get a similar sound. "It wasn't exactly the same, but no one complained". I don't think he used the Marshall Guv'nor live, only the A/B/Y box, but i could be wrong; he could have hooked the Guv'nor up to one of the Mesa's.

That's pretty cool, what are some songs i can really hear the bass in from Lamb Of God? Sounds interesting.

Yea, I've heard Markbass isn't too good with distortion, but it sounds like you've got something pretty good going on anyway :bassist:
And yes, the soap-bar pickups could be a problem with trying to get other peoples sound(s). You can pick up a real cheap ( $110.00) P-Bass copy at Rondomusic.com (just search on google) if you're interested in having a wde range of sounds available between the Ibanez &that. :smug:

sims of j.lizard uses tube ampeg and rat. wwrong of NMN uses marshall. do not know about pedals.
i couple nickel roundwounds w/ ampeg to get that sound.

have no idea about doyle's band. had no chance of seeing them live.

cheers

Sims uses GK heads, he's a big fan of solid state gear according an interview with him in one of the bass mags. I've seen him using Ampeg heads too but I think they were promoter supplied.

Rob Wright doesn't use pedals for No Means No, afaik he uses Marshall guitar heads, he certainly used to anyway.

Edit: just seen your other post he was using a V4 in dublin last year too. I'd say he has the use of the Ampeg when he's in Europe, so he can leave his GK and custom 15's at home.

Something really cool about LOG is that for Wrath (the new one) and I believe one of their other ones, they included a companion cd that has all of the band members' recorded tracks isolated from the others so that if you want, you can take each of the wav files and re-mix them.

One of the best tracks to listen to as a good example is track #2 off of Wrath that's called "In Your Words".

Yeah, the rig I have now is pretty decent. I have the volume up to maybe 3 - 3 1/2 and apparently I rattle pictures & lamps on the tables upstairs (we jam in our drummer's finished basement) so, yeah the Peavey cab can definitely move some air. :smug:

I gotta say though, the only other head that could keep the low end nice and crisp like the LMII was the Mesa, so even though I can't quite get the distortion tone I'd like out of it, I enjoy the clean low end wayyyyyy more. That and the VT gives it that extra push in the higher frequencies that kinda brings everything together. I'd like to post some samples but the band hasn't recorded anything since I've switched to bass. That and when I do, it'll most likely be through a Pod.

Man, i just listened to some of the bass tracks from "Wrath" and it's amazing! He has a really rich tone. Do you know what he uses on the wrath album to get that sound?

By the way, Kurt's tone on Infrared and the bass tone on wrath are somewhat similar. They both have sort of a hollow sound (though Kurt's is more), and they both have that "fluffy" (if you know what i mean) awesome tone that you know is something like a sansamp.

Here's the a list of his gear from Wikipedia (I remember this list from an interview with Bass Player magazine)...

* Jackson USA Custom Concert Bass
* Dean Markley bass strings
* Mesa/Boogie 400+ amplifier
* Mesa RoadReady and Powerhouse 8x10 cabs
* Sennheiser wireless system
* Dean XL7 ER5-B12 Picks
* Dean TXL-52 Dicks .87W
* Tech 21 Sans Amp Bass Driver DI
* DBX 266XL Compressor/Gate

I can get kinda close to that with my Pod and sounds awesome through headphones but like I said, it unfortunately doesn't translate very well when cranked up through a power amp.

Droooooool!
