Tech 21 Steve Harris Fly Rig

How about just turning the controls until you get a sound you like. That's how I use my '66 Fender Bassman.

Mid 2 is before.

This is it.

I hated the tone I got out of my GK 800RB until I drastically cut some low-mids from it and boosted the high mids only very little(I generally like 1.5-2.5k a lot more than its’ 1K high mid).
All of a sudden the tone I liked started to show its’ teeth.

I definitely do this generally as I haven’t had particularly linear or “flat” equipment for most of my musical life (including a similar era 60s Bassman!), but I do like to know what’s happening in a general sense at least. The manual (and my ears) are telling me that both Mids are post-gain, especially in comparison to other Character pedals I’ve tried but the gain level in general is lower on the SH-1 than the others in my experience so these kind of gain changes could be more subtle. I’ll mess around more with the pedal with this in mind and see where it takes me!

I just did another shootout between SH-1 and Oxford. Each has its own features and strengths, but there's definitely some overlap. The SH-1 is better suited for bass (as one would expect) but both are keepers. :bassist:

SH-1 is on my list.

There are way too many pedals on my list but the top 3 are this one, the Bass Butler by Orange and now that awesome-looking Dual Band by FEA.

current state of the pedalboard. main tone is the dUg, the SH1 is subtle but gives me more defined mids, with a boost of grindy mids with the 2nd channel. overdubbed track mixed into an old rehearsal recording. normally for recording I go out of each pedal separately through the xlr for complete control in the mix. the VTDI gets a mixed signal for onstage simplicity through the speaker sim. this was recorded on the cheap at home so its just out of the VT.

Although I'm not a big fan of the VT(by itself), those mids sound awesome and aggressive. Pretty sure I'm hearing the SH-1's influence on your tone here. My VT never sounded like that.

(I liked it enough when the B3K was being fed into it, but not enough to keep it)

really no eq going on in the VT except a bit of bass boost. The character knob is set to about as flat as it gets. Really using it just for the speaker sim when going to FOH and as a final EQ if I need some adjustment to the room so I don’t ever change the settings on the other two. I found no good use for the VT on its own either

Is it based on the VT Bass like the 'normal' bass Fly Rig?

BTW It seems that Tech21 keeps pumping those Fly Rigs for all my favourite bassist one by one. DD Verni should be next! (He actually lives very close by from what I remember )

I should not read this thread and the DP-3X thread.
Now I want one.
Cant decide which one.
I mostly played classic/hard rock and heavy metal.

LOL. Can't help you, dude. IMO they're both awesome for those styles.

Actually, my advice is to check as many demos as you can find and just go with the one that you think you prefer, or flip a coin if you can't decide. I personally don't believe there's a wrong answer.

Here's a way to decide - do you plan to use this for home practice, or mainly for band use? If you want a choice you can hear best at home, the DP-3X has a dedicated headphone out.
Me, I kept the dUg and sold the SH1 - but that's cause I have a few other ways to get close to what the SH1 offered, the dUg is a bit more specialized.

So how are you guys using your SH-1, in the effects loop/di or straight into the amp? I'm redoing my pedalboard and trying to sort out my new setup (DI-2112 to work with as well) and would love some ideas.

Straight into the amp for me, whether there's an FX loop available or not.

I forgot to post when I got this. I'm running it through the clean channel on the Billy Sheehan pedal and I have a mute switch for the distortion channel on the Sheehan. So, my main tone these days is a PBass with Geezer EMGs with the Steve Harris clean tone mixed with the Sheehan distortion tone. It sounds amazing.

Interesting choice- why did you choose the SH-1 for solely clean pre duties? It has some great sounding clean tones to be sure, but for my uses a more neutral box makes more sense for clean duties (I don’t find the SH-1 to be great at “neutral” tones). Are you using it for the amp-style emulation? It does do this pretty well IMO
