Tech 21 VT Bass 200 Combo Amp!

cool. I use my VT Bass Deluxe as a preamp (running into my amp's effects return), but there's no blend. Aside from my SVT, the VT really sounds like a nice fat Ampeg!

Did the VT come with a recommended list of settings for various sounds, and is SVT one of them? Honestly, I don't think I'd know how to dial that in.

(derail) this is a Tech21 thread but what is the benefit of getting a VT compared to an Ampeg pedal. I'm not ranking on the Tech21, but I'm suspecting the Tech21 is going to be able to do more tricks besides the SVT. (end derail)

The VT character knob goes from mellow b15 through to angry suped up SVT tones. Add in the EQ- pretty versatile.

Yes, but it's a super scooped setting. Sort of if the ultra lo and hi buttons are both engaged. It was interesting, but not for me when I tested it. However, obviously you can adjust the knobs to taste from there, just like you can with an SVT - but then you're no longer technically using the recommended SVT setting. Nothing wrong with that at all.

The Tech 21 IMO does a bit more in thanks to the cab sim. On top of that I've heard that some feel that the VT may do a bit better distorted tone as well, but I can personally neither confirm nor deny that.

I suspect one may be better for copping some types of Ampeg tones and one for others. YMMV.

Yes there are recommended settings to get an SVT tone as well as a B15 tone. I just use my ears and find the sweet spot between the character and drive knobs. I've never played through the Ampeg DI/preamp/pedal, but I imagine it sounds great. I think the VT Bass deluxe might offer more features, and certainly has more tonal options because you can store up to 6 different tones.

Has anyone heard, or better yet seen one of these? I'm "on notice", and I know it's only been a couple of months...but I've got a bad itch that needs scratched! Especially since some of the big retailers have MB CMD 121P for around $800 right now.

Worth the wait for something fresh and new, or go with what ya know? Appreciate any info or opinions.

Oh yeah, this guy! Well, at least it appears that there's a bit more info available as to its power rating. See below, the extension speaker out is labeled as "8ohm min 100w"

Assuming I'm using logic correctly this early in the morning, it appears that the combo by itself then is only good for 130/140 watts without the extension.

What are you currently using, just as a point of reference? Are you set on a combo? Do you have any experience with any of the other products in the Tech 21 VT line?

Just looking at the specs, this VT Bass 200 and the CMD 121P don't really seem like they're in the same weight class, but the Markbass is also a good bit pricier.

Currently combo's, a 2006ish Ampeg BA-115HPT, that has recently failed me and looks like $400 to repair a never reliable amp to begin with. So I picked up an Ashdown AAA30 and dug up my old Sansamp Bass Driver DI to get started. I do not have experience with the VT line, but am confident I would enjoy and put to good use.

I did have a head/cab "back in the day", Trace Eilliot GT (I think), and a Hartke 410, which was a workhorse for many years. Stopped playing around 12 years ago and just making a mid-life come back! So no gigs yet. I am progressing faster then I imagined though, so gigs may be closer then first thought.

I did not realize the exact output of the VT Bass 200, so this means the only way to get the 200 is with extension cab, likely there's for another $499? The 130/140 watts can work for me now, but if I get gig, seems like there are better options for $1000. Maybe I'm better with the MarkBass for now, then get head/cab set up if/when I need it.

Thanks for the input! One thing about waiting for something...get a lot of time to analyze that decision.

Honestly, if you get a gig, the single 12" is probably more limiting than the watts depending on how loud your band gets. I guess that kind of goes for the Markbass too IMO.

If you like the Sansamp/VT thing, I'd say the best bet would probably be the VT Bass 500 as I mentioned earlier in the thread along with an inexpensive 212 of some sort. Or... any other respectable used head/cab combination paired with your BDDI. Just my 2c, YMMV.

You make a good point Kro...if I'm going Tech 21 it's the head and cab. What about the Tech 21 cab? Get one now and then another when ready. I can not find any reviews on the cab, but they are available to ship. Or grab the MB121 and add MB cab when ready? That's a tone I like, but prefer max versatility.

I should have clarified, money isn't so much of a concern, just hold the opinion that my gear shouldn't outweigh my ability. Hence my first amp bought in 14 years! Haha

The difference between 150-200 watts through a single 12" speaker will be negligible at best. Having an additional speaker will make the bigger difference. The concept for the amp is a light weight grab and go package for small gigs, rehearsals, jams, etc. With an additional speaker cab you have the flexibility to use it in a situation that requires more power.
