Yeah, I like that the EQ is flatter with the Bite off. I still prefer the speak simulation on because it rolls off the top end like you'd expect with a vintage tweeterless cabinet. I think it would make sense to have the bottom end roll off controlled by that button also, instead of making it a function of the Bite control.

Yeah, I like that the EQ is flatter with the Bite off. I still prefer the speak simulation on because it rolls off the top end like you'd expect with a vintage tweeterless cabinet. I think it would make sense to have the bottom end roll off controlled by that button also, instead of making it a function of the Bite control.
Starting to wonder if I might be happier with a Para driver, instead of the VTBass DI.
The main reason I am very pleased with the Tone Hammer is the parametric mid.
I am hoping to find a VTBass DI to try out, but not even Guitar Center out here has one in the store.
Anybody know of one in stock anywhere in the Portland, OR to Seattle area?

Yup, that would make sense, since the low end roll off is due to the cab, tie it to the cab sim button!
I'd also like to be able to use the cab sim only on the XLR output.
You might prefer the Para Driver RandyS. I've owned one twice in the past 5 years or so. I was always able to coax a warm tone out of that one, the highs are cut off around the same frequency as the VT bass but it doesn't sound that way probably due to all the high mid content around 1k of the VT bass. On the VT Bass DI I have had the mids backed off to around 10 oclock with the character between 10 & 11 oclock. Both pedals have a blend which I really like, you can flatten your eq & introduce some of the requencys that these pedals cut.
I played around today with the speaker sim enabled, I can start with all eq at noon with it enabled & the mids are definitely tamed. The lows become fuller & lower, I find I have to lower them a pinch with the speaker sim on. I don't remember fighting with settings as much with Version 2 VT bass, I wish they had just left the speaker sim defeat the same on this version. I can get good tones with this one, it just takes more trial & error.
Can the dirt be dialed back to just a warm clear tube sound?

Maybe, perhaps....hard to say. I think if you don't mind disengaging the bite then definitely.
I get a little overdrive with mine in that range with the passive basses I'm using. The drive knob is the one knob I rarely change much, it stays in the 10:30 to 11:30 range.
+1 It's all relative to how hot your basses are. I usually leave the Drive setting around 9 o'clock for a cleaner tone. I have some basses that I can push as high as 11 o'clock and still get a clean tone while others will have very noticeable overdrive at that same setting.
9 oclock on the drive should be clean unless you crank the snot out of the eq & character. I like the early overdrive with Tech 21 pedals after that it doesn't sound as tubelike of a breakup. Are you finding certain settings you like after the honeymoon period Eublet? If so please share. I found a setting that worked well playing along to Sabbath's Master Of Reality today: level 11 oclock, blend 1:30, Mid, Character, Lows, treble 11:58, Drive 11Bite: disabled (always), Speaker Sim: in enabled.

Had a few of the standard ones and a Leeds in the past but just got a VTDI. The bite button is what sold me, finally I can have the speaker sim on without the icepicky 2Khz clank boost.
Is anyone using the pedal/DI as a preamp into power amp? Any pros or cons? I like the idea of the reliability of a QSC or Crown, with a tube sounding preamp. I have used the VT Bass(v2) and loved it, but never direct to power amp.
This unit has a different application than the original VT. Because it's a "DI" the focus was on that application. With the bite and speaker sim disengaged you get flat response. The VT Bass DI can be modded if you want the same hi cut filter that is on the V2 VT Bass. You would need to solder a 22nF cap to the board, We can perform this mod for $15 + shipping. The mod will not void the warranty unless you damage the circuit board in the process. Here is a photo of the board and cap:

Thanks Tech 21 good to know. I'll take a look a my board & possibly attempt it, I'm not scared of wielding the iron.
Do you mean high pass filter (low cut)? I think this is what Glen18 was talking about.
