If you're looking for fuzz, you may want to try a Fulltone Bass Drive MOSFET, it has a bunch of different overdrive sounds in it. Also Ibanez makes a pretty decent pedal for OD & fuzz, I think it's called a Phat Bass, not sure though. I tried one about two years ago, but I went with the Fulltone at the time, as I'm more into a clunk sound than a fuzz sound. At any rate, good luck and try as many pedals as you can before you buy. Get what's good for your ears, not mine or anybody else's...

+1 on this. I didn't notice much difference and the VLE and VPF knobs still affected the sound when adjusted. It also seems like you lose alot of headroom since the gain on the LM2 is not in play when you go through the FX loop. I really had to push the drive and level on the VT bass quite high to get the same volume level as when I put it through the VT bass.

I'm not sure exactly how much this has to do with my ears or my bass or both, but today I finally got to around to finding a setting, that sounds pretty close to Josh Homme and Chris Goss from the first Queens of the Stone Age album. In fact, when I first tried the VT Bass with everything at 12, I thought it sounded quite similar, but today I finally got to A/B the pedal with the actual recording. All it took was a tiny bit of tweaking.

Obviously it doesn't sound exactly the same. IIRC, Homme used an SVT to record, but as far as getting as close as possible with an emulator I think I've pretty much nailed it.

I used a Spector Euro LX with both pickups cranked, and the treble and bass both fully rolled back. The VT Bass was running direct into my soundcard.

The settings I used -

Low - 12:00
Mid - 12:00
High - 12:00
Character - 10:30
Drive - 12:00

Like I said, it's already close with everything at 12:00, only the character needed adjustment. Though initially, before comparing to the record, I was cranking the drive slightly more.

can the vt bass help get a justin chancellor-esque tone? im trying to chase something similar to that tone. only issue is that the only overdrive i have is a pd7. justins tone seems to have a SLIGHT drive to it (probably not the best word, but i cant think of how else to describe it), but the lowest drive i can get with my pd7 is way too cheesy sounding and sucks my tone right out the window. im thinking about getting one, i use alot of different tones and think this could help me out with some of them. current setup:
ibanez sr400qm -> digitech bass synth wah -> ibanez pd7 -> digitech bass multichorus -> acoustic b200h head -> g-k goldline 410 cab

I've not tried but whilst playing around with mine, I wouldn't say I've hit upon anything I'd say was reminiscent of his tone. Back in my JC fanboy days I did manage to get a JC-esque tone, using a Sansamp Bass Driver in a loop with an EQ pedal and some liberal EQing with the preamps on my bass and amp.

If you really wanna sound like JC without forking out for a Wal, getting a Demeter VTBP-201S preamp might help a bit (if you can afford it). IMHO, his GK doesn't contribute an awful lot to his sound.

Oh and I nearly forgot: Fresh strings and playing with a pick. The key ingredients to a JC-esque tone!

Yeah I do it works really well imo. I run an MXR bas di+ into it btw. Then a pitch black after which I use as a mute as well as the obvious tuner.

man I'm still playing with it but I tried all the settings that were posted here on that chart and the ones on the sheet that came with it and I think I kind of like the stock SVT settings the best.

Except I added a bit more CHARACTER (about 10 o'clock) and turned the drive down a tiny bit (11 o'c).

But that's only in my practice room at a relatively low volume and I am sure it will change when I get it with the band and start mixing it up with my guitarists sound.

But I must admit it has made me stand there playing some of our riffs over and over because it's like hearing them for the first time.
Sounds so good.

What settings are you using now?
