technique on flats

I generally play round wounds for the sound. On my new built ('51 P), I am trying to keep flats on it. Right now I play without a guitarist, and sometimes play chords drones on the upper strings whil playing the bass time to fill out the sound during guitar solos. I also do a little slapping. Am I going to have to bring a second bass for those songs?

I do not think it will be necessary, but, you will be the final judge. I try for a standup bass sound and flats with foam rubber at the bridge and everything on dead zero give me that. That may be so far from what you want that you may need to make a choice between flats and another guitar.

EDIT} As to everthing on dead zero. Not good advise. I kept noticing my D and G string did not have the volume the bottom two strings had. Dougggh - when I opened up both the volume came up. Really does not affect that up right bass sound I like all that much.

Yeah, gonna have to experiment. Normally I am too lazy to bring a second bass on some smaller gigs.

well flats and round doesn't sound similar so maybe it won't be bright enough or articulated enough or whatever ... you may have to work around your EQ to get a usable tone etc and slap may be the technique that you'll find lacking but who know you may end up liking the sound
