here's an image of a SCPB route ... notice the non-rectangular shape and lack of ears that a J-bass style single-coil pickup has

and a poor quality image showing the detail of where a SCPB pickup leads are located. if you mod your bass to utilize one of these, you may also need to drill a new wire tunnel into the control cavity. NOTE: Be really careful with those esposed wire leads - there are two miniscule windings that are exposed on the outside edge of the pickup ... if either of these wires touch your grounded cavity the pickup will ground out and make no sound, and/or should you accidentally scrape and break one of these leads you will have a not so pleasant job of repairing the winding leads so your pickup will again make sound

yes, the sound is a single-coil type sound somewhat like a J-bass pickup ... but it is also a completely different winding specification with it's own unique sound to it.

hi thanks for your kind help...my question wasn't "tecnical" (i already knew that i would have had to make a bigger hole for the jazzbass pickup), but i wanted to know if it could be a good idea sound-wise, and if anybody of you did already try that...

Another fun drop in pickup idea for this type of bass would be one of the old lipstick Danelectro/Silvertone bass pickups. I always liked the open sounding tone of those.

Oh, man! I just *almost* picked up this Yamaha tele on Ebay:

Actually I DID win it on a second-chance offer for super cheap, but the seller reneged on the deal (he didn't know how 2nd chance offers work).

I had totally planned to stick a couple of SD Antiquities in there and wire it like a strat. Lipsticks would have been cool too. Some LaBella flats, ooh baby... Oh well.

Now someone buy this tele bass off of Ebay please. I'm sorely tempted to hit the buy it now but that will leave me a bit short on Christmas money.

Looks VERY much like the Yamaha posted by Bongomaia with the shape of the tuner keys, the chrome truss rod cover and the zero fret. Super cool looking though and sure to be worth the $400. If it weren't for the holidays I'd be showing this one as MY new bass.

If you want to know what a single coil P sounds like, just use a Jazz Bass and turn on the neck pickup only...that's essentially all it is. Yes, you'll also get the single coil buzz.
No you can't simply install a J pickup, because the P pickup is shaped much smaller. Seymour also makes the Antiquity pickups for those SCPB's.

It's a different sound than a split coil P, I like to call it a much growlier tone. And with flats, to me it sounds 'woodier'.
But forget the pink custom shop '55 , I already bought it.

I wonder if, say someone got that Tele bass off ebay, and put a DarkStar in it, and then put a SCPB pickup in it and ran the controls like a Jazz bass, could it be hum canceling?

only if one of the pickups was built RWRP would you have a hum-cancelling set-up. You could always order a DS wound this way, as Fred does this all the time upon request

I have a '51 Reissue and I compared it to a standard split-pickup P-bass that belongs to a friend. Both had Chrome Flats on them and were played through the same amp, so it was an apples-to-apples comparison.

The '51 had a crunchier sound. Deep bass, plenty of highs, and a nice "growl". The split-pickup P-bass had a "tub"-ier sound. More Motown-like and compressed. The '51 sounded more aggressive to me, but I think that when you roll off the highs, it can cover more standard P-bass territory too. The '51 is definitely not a Jazz bass sound, although it does have "bite".

And the '51 pickup is noisier. The split-pickup is quieter when you are not playing.

Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Hey Chef,

His didn't have a DarkStar but it was a tele bass. He really made it sound good. I'm so glad I was able to see them in person...

I saw andy w/ the Mule thus. here in madison--I noticed that bass too (along w/ a sea foam green jazz, i believe) He had quite an interesting tone--very mid-heavy, virtually no treble, to my ears--almost reminded me of woody's gibby's at times!

I love the DS look! I think it'd really jump out against a white PG

What are the necks like on the tele's and RI's?
