I had trouble as well, as I usually use a floating thumb, but sometimes rest it on the PUP. They are quite delicate and I've heard of the things exploding after being leaned on too long. In this detail, the split coil is, truly, 'better'.

Sue me.

I played a '70 Tele for a decade and my '51 RI for two decades. I did catch the E under the pickup once being exuberant. Never have I had any damage happen and I always anchored my thumb there.
I wouldn't worry.:)

As a grab and go I keep split coil at the top of the pile, great mids and low mids cuts through great.
I'll also grab the slab body single for a change but have to be carefull to avoid club work because of all the neon and big screen TVs. Private gigs and festival stages it sounds great, great high mids and mids and cuts through quite nicely thank you.
For three piece bands I work with I love the humbucker, huge, giant ,fat tone but have to be mindfull of my attack as this beast will get quite boomy. But I love all three.
sorry about the crappy phone pic.
edit to add the humbucker neck dates to Feb 72 so it's an early one.

i have an early humbucker tele bass that dates to nov 1971....
That 's probably the earliest one of those I've seen - which would also mark the earliest use of the 'Bullet' truss rod adjuster that I know of.

...while i like them, i actually much prefer the single coil ones like my '68 (with lollpop tuners).
Used to have one with lollipops, but after the event no-one ever believed me about those tuners. Thanks for proving that for me, John! :smug:

Here is my interpretation of the telecaster bass.

Recently I turned the slab body into a contoured one because I didn't like the playability of the slab body. I also replaced the neck. Now it has a rosewood fretboard.

The pickup is a SD SCPB-3. Lot's of low-end and mid's, maybe as a result of the rosewood?

I did the mod's recently and haven't had the opportunity to play on the bass in a live setting. But I think it will do well in that situation.
