Telecaster vs. Precision Bass

yeah, I noticed that they do not offer a '51-'54 5 string guard even though the make the body... I am thinking of building a'54-ish 5 string in burst. Like sting's but in a 5 string. Ill have to add the tummy cut and the forearm bevel, but those shouldnt be too hard...

Im not sure how I want to do the pickup though... 5 string single or a modern fender 5 P pickup... or maybe a PJ... so many options!

Regenerate Guitar Works, who did the assembly and tweakout.
The one warmoth made at that point was 72 humbucker, or somehow "wrong sized."

Oh man, that's sweet...

Who makes , in your opinion,
the best P pickups-both split an single coil versions?

IMO, duncan's SPB-1 is the best split P and duncan's SPB-1 if you want a stock vintage single coil. i'm using fralin's sisde by side ones in a couple of my single coil P's and i prefer them for live use due to them being hum free, especially in clubs that have questionable AC (i.e dimmers, flashing lights, florescents etc.).

I haven't tried the Rio Grande, but I've used the SD SCPB3 several times, and I like it.
I believe that's the same thing as the 1/4lb'er.....

I liked the hi output but it didnt have the vintage sound. SD had at least two versions. One was vintage with original sized pole pieces.
The Muy has more output than the original but has that quirky open airy thing at some frequencies that the original had. It has more lows. My experience is with the '70 Tele and now a Japanese '51 reissue.
I saw the Tele in the Fender catalogue. I liked the angles on the bridge covers, and though I visually appreciated all the Fenders the Tele got me. I bought one used for about $150 in '72. Loved it. Played it for a decade. Neck felt like butter after a song or two.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
Has anyone here possibly tried Haeussel,Delano or Bassculture?

Those are generally my favorites when it comes to Pickups but I have not heard their takes on version of the P yet.

I have several of both the single coil P-Basses and the split coil P-Basses. The single coil seems more lively, but they both sit nicely in all sorts of bands and recording. One is not definitely better than the other. Just a bit different. Plus, there is EQon most amps and in most studios to tweak in any differences. You definitely DO NOT need a replacement pickup for the single coils and definitely not a Dark Star.
IMHO Duncans are punchier and look better. I work with a lot of top pro players and not a one of them has a Dark Star on any of their many, many basses........just sayin,,,,,,,,,,

When a person makes a choice between 2 items that are the same price, that person chooses what they feel is the better of the two. Now, if the ratio was 1:1 or even 4:1, you could argue that it's personal preference, blah blah. But when it's 5,000:1, it pretty much becomes a fact.

If you perfer the single coil P, that's nice. But trying to claim that the single coil P p/u in on par with the split coil P p/u is like claiming that you prefer muskrat to beef, and that both are just as good.

Mmmmmm... Muskrat......
