The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

well the wife will be happy, though I'm sad for my boy Dubinsky. Now to meet Russia...

I notice with interest that Red Wings haven't met the Pens in regular season. My whining and bitching aside, all I could think of while I watched last night was "wonder if they'll let them play the Pens this hard". Bad and surprising late game calls aside, refs let them play last night.

Thinking this will be a Wings-Pens match-up I'm real interested to see which way the refs go. East to West look like completely different brands of hockey, more so even than in previous years, so I'm wondering what the attitude of officiators will be.

My opinion.....since this is not a heated rivalry like Pens/Flyers, I think the refs will let them play a little more physical. But if guys go out and start playing over the top physical, I bet the whistles come right out. The NHL is trying to appeal to more fans, so they can not have the fighting and "goon" image many people relate to hockey.

I do not get the impression that the RW's have guys who go out to hurt people on the ice. Maybe they do, and I am not aware of it. There is no one on the Pens who is sent on the ice to hurt people that I know of. So I think the refs will not be as concerned with protecting any of the stars in the series. I'm talking about stars on both sides of the ice, not just Sid and Malkin.

You are correct. Kronwall and Drake WILL take the big open ice hit if the opportunity presents itself, but they're clean players. Kronwall has had some monster hits this playoffs already. Stuart can staple a forward with his head down against the boards with the best of them. Surprisingly, Pavel Datsyuk, who finished the regular season 4th in scoring for the league, and is a finalist for the Selke, is one of the Wings leaders in hits for the post season.

While there were some egregiously bad calls in the game last night, imho particularly the no-goal and the trip on Rafalski when he lost an edge, I've got to give Turco credit for some GREAT saves. I was calling this for the Wings in 6, as I figured Turco had to be able to steal a game, and the Wings wouldn't show up like they needed to in a game. The Stars showed some heart, and while I do feel they had some help from the refs, they also for the most part, played the better game.

That said, I can't complain about yesterday - got a caption picked for Buccigross's column on ESPN yesterday (the Kerry Fraser reference) on my first try, and I got my van back from the repair shop for about $3000 less than I expected, which means I'll be able to get more bass goodies this summer ;)

I still think it's going to be a Wings-Pens final. And, both the Freep and the Detroit News mentioned Franzen is starting light workouts, which is a good sign.

It was good to see my boys scratch and claw to get a W. I also appreciate you keeping the ref chirping light and bouncy;)......... The disallowed goal was clearly a makeup call from game 1. I personally like the idea of the make up call. It seems to be an ideal way for refs to unofficially fix a mistake.

How about that last 2 minutes? 6 on 3 with an empty net at the other end? Crazy........

I wasn't talking about hurting anyone, fighting or generally gooning it up, no one wants penalties... there's physical games, and then there's not so physical. So far, I haven't seen a very physical game this whole play-offs, but I haven't seen a whole bunch of games, been working late. Detroit/Dallas last night seemed to me a whole lot physical than Philly/Pitts the night before. Generally the west has been considered a little more fast, a little more physical for some years now, especially after the retirement of Scott Stevens and a lot of the Easts physical players from years past.

Sometimes big hits are tolerated and physical play is more tolerated, stuff in front of the net for example, and sometimes not. I wonder how a Wings/Pens series will be handled.

Last night, Kris Draper was flattened, by a cross check to the back and stepped and layed on by a Stars dman in the last 30 secs with no call (and I think that's right), you gotta think that won't be tolerated against the Pens.

True...hope they haven't shot their entire wad in this period. The score coulda been 5-0.
I'm expecting a few PP chances for the Pens in the 2nd Period.

That was the best period Philly has had this Playoff season.
Thing is, they need to play at least this well for the next 11 periods.
;)

Whoa! Philly is playing really aggressive offensively tonight. They look really good, and was what I was expecting from them all series. Too bad they didn't try it in the first three games. It's going to take a huge effort from my Pens to come back. The one thing I got going for me right now is that we have scored four goals in each of the other three games.

See you guys at the second intermission.
