The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

I gotta say something.......

I know it's inevitable to talk about bad calls. It's the nature and right of every fan.Plus it's fun.

But

I have no idea how hockey refs does what they do. Those guys do the impossible, they are multi tasking beyond my imagination while being put under pressure from every direction within their jobs. The real time windows that the execute calls with in are tiny, I'm talking 1/0s of a second in some cases. They must be physically exhausted from skating non stop, breaking up fights,I wouldn't even want to drop the puck between 2 pros with out pads and a cage.

Those guys are nuts.

You noticed that eh?

Refs are very bad this playoffs... very very bad...

+1. Although there are always lots of controversial calls/non-calls, it seems to be worse this post-season.

I am also reminded of an award I was given one season - the "That Ref Sucks" Award, because I was constantly chirping refs from the bench when the backup was in net, and kept yelling at them from my end of the ice when the puck was in the other zone. I'll scan a picture of it at some point (the award is a cheap piece of paper :().

Is anybody else following the World Championships instead of the NHL playoffs? Both series right now are quite boring IMO, so I'm watching the WC's. Canada vs Sweden today, should be an excellent game.

It was good to see my boys scratch and claw to get a W. I also appreciate you keeping the ref chirping light and bouncy;)......... The disallowed goal was clearly a makeup call from game 1. I personally like the idea of the make up call. It seems to be an ideal way for refs to unofficially fix a mistake.

How about that last 2 minutes? 6 on 3 with an empty net at the other end? Crazy........

I'll call a spade a spade, but as much as I'm one of the most diehard Red Wings fans outside of the Metro Detroit area, I'm a HOCKEY fan first and foremost. If someone on the other team makes a great play, I'll express my displeasure at the Wings going down, but in the same breath give props where they're due.

Makeup call = 2 blown calls. No excuse. Period. The end of game penalties imho were a token apology for the previous bad calls. As I said, the reffing sucked, but the Stars also outplayed the Wings. I just wish I could have heard Mickey Redmond calling the game :)

I didn't see the Pens-Flyers game, but my dad called to tell me the Flyers won (he's a huge fan), so I can't comment about the officiating in that one.

Andrew Jones: Your point is well taken, and I agree with it. The zebras have a tough and thankless job. However, I don't think it's too much to ask that the refs get it right and preserve the integrity of the game. Whether or not the team I root for wins or loses, I want it to be because they won the game on the ice, not because the refs blew a call or intentionally? blew a second call to "make it up"

they don't show WC's in USA (not on my TV anyway), although if your prepared to I guess you could find a feed somewhere. Who's in goal for Canada, Marty tanked out huh?

I'd love to see Henrik do well, but my wife is Finnish so I root for them. I'd love to see Finland/Sweden finals match up, however unlikely, to see if we can reclaim some pride from the Olympics loss. Their were tears that day!!

Pascal Leclaire and Cam Ward are being rotated in net. Leclaire should be starting today, with Ward starting the final game the Canadians play. While a Finland/Sweden final would be awesome, I'd rather go for a Russia/Canada final (mostly because it would be amazing hockey to watch, but also partly because I'm both Russian and Canadian).

when you see those two names and think about who they play for, you realize that no team in the NHL has a "bad" goaltender... when you think back 8, 10 years you could pin whole losing seasons on severe weakness's in goal. Of course it's always very debatable, and sure some teams you could say are behind in they're growth of their goal position, but no one has a desperately bad situation in goal. That's great.

Yeah, I'm watching and I'm guessing you know what team I support :D Although Iäm having issues with the broadcast times. Last game (Finland-USA) started at 2.00 AM. It kinda sucks if you got school/job to go to. But I like the games better because of the narrower rink.

What a bummer for me. But dang, the Flyers played some good hockey last night. They finally decided to play their game and stop trying to bully us. The Pens were clearly caught up in the emotion of the game, and I think that distracted them. I saw Sid and a few other guys running their mouths from the bench and generally being too busy talking trash than playing hockey.

But that is not why we lost. We got beat by a team determined to win. I think the two Staal goals late were pretty much meaningless. The game was already over, Philly choked the life out of us.

See you Philly guys on Sunday afternoon at the Igloo!!!!!

hey Implosion, how much NHL coverage can U get in Finland. I've been there many times but only saw games every now and again on TV. We're thinking about spending more time there but I'll die without NHL. Is there a satellite subscription possible????

Brother man, when isn't Sidney running his mouth off from the bench or the ice... either to the players that dare skate on his ice, or the officials for not penalizing them...:D. Seriously, that's a big reason why he gets the grief he gets from other teams and their fans...

Last night, it was worse than the other three games. Trust me, I pay attention to this after you guys have been trying to convince me he isn't earning anything he has and the refs are handing it to him. :p

Was it because Sid was getting roughed up more than usual and the refs weren't calling anything? I don't think so. He played his normal game he has in the whole series. I haven't really seen the refs babying him in this series at all. He is getting hit and knocked down all series, and you could tell from how he attacked the goal last night that the Flyers are in his head. Well, at least Jason Smith is.

I saw last night what I worried about in this series, and the Rangers series....the Pens losing the emotional battle of the game. Are we going to blow the next three games? I doubt it, but the Flyers were in our heads last night. Malkin seemed like he was out of it last night as well. I'm not complaining one bit. I like the emotional/mental battles in sports. You see it in the NFL all game long.
