Hey guys! Here is my 370. It's all that I'll ever need. Love. Love. Love. Anyhow I kinda need in. Can I ask for #420? Obvious reasons.... Anyhow, I need to ask as it's old as dirt and I don't think that it's been for its bi-decade maintenance. It recently stopped 'popping' when turned off. I also think that it sounds less consistent? Still loud as hell but... Any advice?
I posted while ago here after scoring a 140 head cheap. I liked it but sold it to a buddy who plays guitar where it better suits him. I recently saw an old 220 locally on Craigslist and found this club again to look into it. I talked to the owner and he says the case is a bit beat up but everything else works well.
My question for those who know is how does this head sound with an active bass? I will soon have a Faital 15 pro neo cab and was thinking of pairing it with the 220 if I can score it for under $300. I play a modded Spector Rebop and an G&L L2000. If the Spector sounds good through it, I was thinking of making the 220 a practice head with the 15" next to my Ampeg v4.

the 220 is a main bass head. i can easily bottom a Ciare 15" 1000 watt rms rated woofer with it. with 2 Ciare 15" 15NDH-4S woofers i can crank it loud enough to go deaf quick and still not be at 10. its an awsome head and makes all the old Ampeg SVT 8-10" rigs sound like junk now. the power rating isnt correct. imo 500 watss rms is more like it. i plan on building a 4-15" cab with ciare 15ndh-4s woofs. this head was made for giging. i have a Ampeg BA112 i use for practice. back in the day the Acoustic was consisdered the best of the best bass heads. Acoustic got into some legal truoble when they practically copied another mfg's amp circut that also gave techinical problems. the legal issues, fines , and bad reputation put Acoustic out of business. i also found another 220 and i am going to get it. the 220 and 4-15 cab is going to make a hell of a rig. the 220 has ALL the upper end and can be made super bright with 15". one thing about 15's that 10's will never do is shake the walls apart. i vibrated stuff out of cabinets with one 15 and my 4-10's dont even come close. i get just as good high freq attack and speed from the 15 as i do with the 10's. get um while you can.
Wow, thanks for the reply. I like the sounds of the 3x15 rigm LDS comes to mind. I was even thinking something like a Bergantino NV115 or a NV412. If its still for sale this weekend, I may grab it since it would smoke my old 140, even as a practice rig.
So I was just told by the seller that the 220 does not turn on although it was working properly about 6 months ago. I may pass up this deal now or only offer him $100 bucks or so because I may need to take the amp to a local tech which would add to the price. I do not know if it's a bad power cord, cap or if it's just blown.
He does have a working 230 model that he wants to sell also with a footswitch. he said it's mainly a guitar rig. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
The 140 is way underrated at 125 watts as well, IME. It can push a lot of cab at 4 ohms for normal-sized venues. I had thought the 220 was the bass version of the 250, but that may be all bad memory at work.
I talked to the seller and he said it was looked over and after a few gigs, the amp kept blowing fuse after fuse which may be a bad transformer and I do not know if I am dedicated to the amp to invest money into it when I can get my other tube amp restored for a few hundred. I'll work with the guy and see what I can find.
Have a B100 that I picked up 2nd hand bout a year ago. Must say it is very capable even for small outdoor gigs.
The 230 is a killer amp. It exactly the same as the 220 but with distortion and reverb. It's technically a guitar amp, but perfectly suitable for bass.
Thanks for the info. The seller found out it was the transformer in the 220 that was the problem so he and I agreed that the amp is dead so to speak. There is a monsterous 370 for sale that looks doesn't look as nice for sale a couple of hours away that I'm looking at now if I can negotiate price, the 370 is an SS beast lol and should sound good with my Faital pro 15 4 ohm cabinet that I am building after I clean it up a little. These old Acoustic heads are great pieces of gear at good prices, I am thinking of offering the guy $200 for the 370 if all the sliders and knobs work.
I have to say, it's pretty unusual for a transformer to go bad in an Acoustic solid-state amp like the 220. Not that it can't happen, but I've worked on a bunch and haven't ever encountered a bad transformer yet. Hopefully the owner doesn't just trash it... somebody could probably save it.
I give out the numbers n order, otherwise it would be a nightmare. You can wait until we're at the 420 mark, just catch me BEFORE I give it to someone else.
Memory hole ...
I once had two different Acoustic heads -
The latter one was a bass head, two channels + graphic equalizer. It had a footswitch with 2 switches : A/B; GEQ. IIRC it was 170W (or 250W).
I think it may have been a 470, but not quite sure. I do not recall it having distortion or reverb. Ran a 2 x 15" cabinet.
The former one was a guitar head, with graphic equalizer, distortion and reverb, and the footswitch had 3 switches : A/B; Distortion; ? can't recall. Or maybe it wasn't two channels.

Both models had the blue stripe.

I once had two different Acoustic heads -
The latter one was a bass head, two channels + graphic equalizer. It had a footswitch with 2 switches : A/B; GEQ. IIRC it was 170W (or 250W).
I think it may have been a 470, but not quite sure. I do not recall it having distortion or reverb. Ran a 2 x 15" cabinet.
The former one was a guitar head, with graphic equalizer, distortion and reverb, and the footswitch had 3 switches : A/B; Distortion; ? can't recall. Or maybe it wasn't two channels.

A bass amp with an A/B channel and no distortion or reverb sounds like a model 320, which was often paired with the wide version of the model 406 2x15 cabinet.
There weren't any Acoustic amps with a 3-button footswitch with A/B channels. You could get A/B and distortion on a 470, but that had a 4-button footswitch (A/B, distorion, reverb, tremelo). I suspect what you're talking about is a 230, with footswitch buttons for reverb, EQ, and master volume. The master volume could generate some sweet sounding distortion.
