Started with a homebrew "Frankenbass" with a J-bass style body and control set up, mini-humbucker pickups and a p-bass style neck (still one of my favorites to play, sounds awesome) and an RMS 15 watt amp. Haven't really bothered upgrading the amp at this point, b/c I pretty much always just play direct into the PA...

Ibanez EXB-404 and a Fender M-80, purchased in the late 80s. I still have the amp and it sounds great. The Ibanez is long gone.

EDIT: What I actually started on in middle school I don't remember. I always played the school's setup for orchestra and show choir. In high school it was a '72 Fender Jazz and a Kustom combo amp 1x15. THAT was fun.

I had a Japanese Jedson EB-3(ish) bass, like this:

Cost me 25 pounds, I think. Lot of money back then for me, it was a couple of months-worth of my Saturday job wages...I quickly realised it was 'sub-optimal'...moved on to a Shaftsbury 4001 copy, which was much better, but sounded nothing like a Ric

And I had a long-term 'lend' of an ancient (at the time - and this was around '74, so it would be really ancient by now) Selmer combo from a friend's father, exactly like this one:

It was noisy as f$%k, is my main memory of it. That was replaced by a Sound City 120 valve head and some 'unbadged' 4x12 cab with Fane speakers in, might have been a Sound City or a Laney?

Both the above are long gone, but I don't miss them. I guess that Selmer would be worth serious money now if it still exists...

My first real Bass amp was a Kustom 100 with the 2-15 bottom. Before that, I played bass through a late 50”s Ampeg ReverbeRocket, which was ok for real small combo work, but to light in the britches for any serious band work.
