The bass that needs no modifications?

I'm not one for modifying basses, but my Status Matrix strikes me as being so great that there is nothing I could do the improve it. Everything is all proprietary Status stuff, which explains why it's such an amazing and complete package!

The Alembic Orion I got dead-cheap in almost mint condition (750 euro, that's dead-cheap this side of the pond) only needed new strings, a new battery and a setup, can't think of any mods to improve it. I wouln't spend the dough on a new one though.
Rickenbackers (4001s or 4003s). Sure you can throw a Hipshot bridge on it if you want, but I never have. They are just perfect straight out of the box.
I'd say my marcus miller sig... it had straplocks and a hipshot when I got it ( so I didn't mod it 
). Though I guess a lot of people end up modding this bass as well, but for me it's fine the way it is.

If a bass doesn't stay in tune, in balance, sound good and feel good out of the box, why buy it?
Because it doesn't stay in tune, doesn't balance on my knee or on a strap and doesn't feel good?
Short answer is no bass needs to be modded unless it's crap or has problems to begin with.
The only mod I make on all basses is straplocks.

Everything I own, I need to tweak in some fashion until I bought this. I literally went over the thing from top to bottom and the only thing I could find (and I tried) was a roughened head on a screw.
Besides slapping on a new set of strings and some polishing, I wouldn't change a thing.
Although I do wish there was a closeable compartment in the case...

G&L. I did change the strings to flats and add straplocks. It was still fine without either of those though.

I have never found a bass that meets my needs right out of the box ... that is why I customize my basses and build mt own basses ...
I love Rickenbackers ... but they can't get the 5 string bass right ... their first attempt the 4003s5 is hard to play because the string spacing is too tight. The 4004cii5 was a tragic failure in that the pickups were only wide enough to pick up 3 of the 5 strings. Finally I learned to modify Rickenbacker to meet my specs.
I love Fender basses but their 5 sting models have necks and string spacing that is way too wide for my hands. So I build my own Fender style basses. I use a p-bass 4 string neck and put 5 strings on it. I use Schaller bridges that give me a 2 5/8" spacing at the bridge, and I use either a j-retro preamp or a 4 band Audere preamp.
I also really like 5 string Fenderbirds ... not many people are making those ... so I make my own.
Future projects that I am considering are a 5 string Alembic Exploiter like Entwistle played. A 5 string cs-74 like Chris Squire plays. A 5 string Rickenbakcer style bass with a 2 5/8" bridge spacing and a 4 band preamp. A 5 string sg style bass.
Also I derive great satisfaction from building and customizing my own basses.
