Well ...... in all honesty, my experience of luthiers down here isn't very positive. I've only met two, and both were pretty well below par. I've recently met a new luthier who's doing some work on a few of my basses, and so far everything seems quite positive, so I guess I could mention his name - Gil Oliveira. Really nice guy, seems to know his stuff, so I'll see how it goes.

I do know one well known (on Talkbass) Portuguese luthier, only he's based in your country. JP! I don't think many people realise he's Portuguese, not French.

in fact I can say that I'm probably 50% french and 50%portuguese :)

My parents are both portugues but I was born in France and always lived here.

Now I will tell you something about the Dutch luthiers!! If you like Sadowsky, you have to take a look at Van der End basses. André is a great guy and makes great sounding (mostly) jazz bass clones. He does not have a website yet but you can check out some of his basses at Invalid Link Removed
Then we have Ferdinand Rikkers who builds Alembic like, neck through basses. Check it out: www.rikkersgitaarbouw.nl
Currently I am making my own bassguitar with lots of help of luthier Sander de Gier. He's also a great guy and sort of "new kid from the block". He is the man if truly you want something special. His own line of basses is incredible. Check it out at Invalid Link Removed
Of course there are more great builders from the Netherlands but these are the only luthiers I have any experience with :bassist:

Wal (very, very hard to find: I didn't succeed to find one neither in London, this summer :bawl: ) Status S2/empathy, and the hi-end ones by Neuser are my favourites

Then Marleaux, Laurus, etc.

Isn´t the Be series sold by Link Removed under the name of Fame Baphomet? I must say they look great - I prefer their shape over Warwicks - and are very attractively priced. I´m seriously considering getting one after Poland joins EU.

I´m a proud owner of a Neuser bass and I´m really digging this whole Eastern Europe luthiery vibe. They have loooong traditions of craftsmanship and the prices are very reasonable. I think we´ll see some fabulous instruments coming from there in the future...

From everything I have seen of JPs.... wow... simply put, I wish I had a larger vocabulary to really describe this awe I get.

I suppose I would have to go with Ritter basses as well... only been to the website a couple times, and those things just look wicked.

AH! I hate threads like these, they just remind me I am too poor for a fine high-end piece of low-note art (as some of my friends and I deem these luxury basses)... oh well, a man can dream, he can always dream :bawl:
