Ive had almost every Mesa amp and theres just something special about the Walkabout. Even the Titan didn't quite replicate it. Use it with a Berg AE212 and I cant get the volume above a 1/4 on with my rockabilly band. Just a great amp if you don't need crystal clean sparkle.

Just because I did not want to carry a 70 lb 1200 watt tone monster (titan v12) and I like the tone AND form factor and weight of the D800.
Different strokes right?
I COULD still tote an SVT, Mesa 400, or any other lead sled if I wanted to. The D800 is a killer head that has a tone I really like. You dont, OK cool mate, power to you.

Mine was in a head case weighed as much as the head. also counting the foot switch, cables and softcase.
the D800, with the same is less than 10.

Maybe it's not ridiculous to you. Just seems that downsizing from a 13 lb amp to 5 lb amp would be unnecessary. Not sure what an SVT or D800 have to do with my comment but glad you like your amp.

An SVT might be reasonable to some, an Overton flyweight to another.
I can stand a 12 lb bass for a 4 hour gig, others cannot tolerate a 10lb bass, some even less. It's not Ridiculous to them, to you? you have your opinion and i respect that.
1/2 the weight, can make a big difference to some!

I didn't specifically say that the D800 was replacing a lot of WAs what I meant is that is probably one of the biggest reasons as of now why I'm seeing more than usual WAs coming up for sale, there's probably a lot of other reasons, maybe someone is selling it cause they gotta TH500 or a GKF800 or other reasons...

I think that guy was referring to it being a bit ridiculous to sell a Walkabout (which is about 13 pounds) to go lighter.

I don't have a dog in your firght. I'm just saying he wasn't referring to lightening up I general, rather specifically the Walkabout which really isn't all that heavy.

I’ve bought and sold many amps, and honestly, the WA is the only one I miss (replaced a V4B with an SVT otherwise that would be another).
The only issue I have is lack of power when using either 1x15 or cabinets that are inefficient.
The masses must not want anything to do with an 800 Watt WA, or, the marketing department at Mesa is very wrong.
If they haven’t built it by now, they never will; perhaps it would cost too much.

The good news is that the used WA pricing looks to be dropping with all the new gear being launched so it won’t be too painful to get another.
BTW, if you really want the amp to sing use either an old Telefunken or Amperex tube; I should never have sold mine with those tubes installed.

I admit I haven't tried the new ones.

But my Walkabout is the only lyrics piece of gear I have ever owned that I can't imagine selling. Having A/Bed them, what were your thoughts on the differences tonally?

When I run my 15" Scout combo and the matching extention cab I have never been able to turn up above 1.5 so wattage has never been an issue. That setup kills both tonally and volume wise.

Same for me. I want to want to buy the new Mesa, but my 15 WA with matching extension just leaves no room for criticism right now.

I bought the last WA Scout 15 that Mesa had left last year and love it. It's the 8ohm driver so I would really like to be able to find one of the 15 extension cabs sometime.

I am also a big Mesa fan, and am watching the D800 threads closely. I am perfectly comfortable with full tube, hybrid or class D power sections, as long as they work (with the associated preamps) to get me the tone(s) I want/need for my gigs. And 80o solid/reliable watts in a 5lb/gig bagable package with great tone shaping options certainly looks interesting.

But ....

I will never sell my Walkabout in the process. Just too darn much tone goodness in that little sucker to give it up.
If I need it to go "louder", I just run more drivers (from a Scout 12 to a Berg CN212, to an LDS 2x15, on up to a Berg NV610).
I fit needs to be louder than any of those, .. the gig needs PA with bass support.

Walkabout: gigged them happily for years as a Precision-ish guy.
Don't care for them so much with a Sadowsky or other active J5 with rounds. Not sparkly enough, for me, with that.
Those are what I mostly play now.
So; that, combined with "only 300 watts," meant I moved from Walkabouts to M6, then M9, then GK MBF series heads.

The Subway has my attention and I'll likely try one.
A High Powered Walkabout with a bright switch my get me back to one.

I just (stupidly? ??) sold my WA Scout combo. ... Not coz I wanna geta D800 or coz I was sick of it orcoz I didn't like the sound. ... Just. ....I'd only been using it IN its 12" combo and I was finding it lacking in headroom often at practices and even at some smaller Blues /jazz gigs.
I found I was favoring taking my Fender Bassman Pro 115 & Aguilar TH500... sad times. But I've the Reissue V4B and Super Bassman for real tube tone. The Aggy don't doa bad job neither

I have nothing to add other than I've been reading every thread on here about the new Subway amp!! I gotta say, its been great to be a bassist with all the newest advancements the last few years(especially being into gear)

Lighter, louder and more efficient is winning out, I'm willing to bet there will be a class D amp released that will sound and *feel* spot on like a tube amp if there isn't one already being made right now!

Won't be selling my WA, ever. The Subway doesn't interest me, or any class D amp for that matter.

The Subway might change your mind on class D. It reminds me a lot of my original Ashdown ABM-500.

That said, it also does not sound exactly like a Walkabout.
